Well, mine ran on Torrent all night and it still has 6 hours to go. Pretty strange, as I have 3.0 Mbps cable... When I woke up it had an error window saying the connection is refused to somewhere, so I'm thinking sometime at night it stopped until that window was cleared. Oh well.
Fileplanet wait is only 9 minutes, so I'll just use that.

My bro showed me today the new Unreal 3 engine pics. Looks like DOOM III finally has a true competitor!

Yeah, that CS looks pretty sick. CS currently has just about the best gameplay of any multiplayer FPS out there, and with that preserved and just the insanity of the HL2 engine, it's bound to be super duper. I don't play CS anymore because it's just gotten so old, but I'm sure with HL2 it'll ruin the young lives of so many more people.

Some weirdo motivational speaker told me that 1940-1990 advanced 100 years and 1990-2000 advanced 100 years. 2000-2005 will be 100 years.
Life as we know it will be drastically different in short periods of time.
CS is just the begining.

Got the vid in 30 mins...mwahah
HL2 single player looks like it will be AMAZING! These guys put so much into it, I don't get into games usually, but my heart was beating faster and my friend and I were actually screaming when watching the vid! I can't wait!
CS looks like it could use a bit more tho...it feels like they used the HL2 engine and the exact same features otherwise...it'd be cool if they implemented more complex gameplay options.

Screw that. The gameplay is the best out of any fps out there right now. Probably even ever. That's what has kept it around. The new engine and physics are gonna be great.
Notice when the CT threw the nade at the end there how the barrels blew up and flew around? Notice how you could see reflections in the water? That'll add to the game a lot.

Hehe, you are right in a sense. HL2 singleplayer we can see more improvement in the extra scenarios they can create. CS is already really good. However, there is strategy in CS, but imagine the added complexity, should they choose to implement it, with the physics engine. Think about destruction of walls, slight cracks created, etc. If they can full that off and raise the realism to a new level, and not just be content with CS gameplay, it could become grand.
The feeling is like when I go paintballing and there ANYTHING can happen and is totally unpredictable and real. In CS, tho it's my fav game, there are large limits. If we could push those limits back, imagine then. I also feel the keyboard really limits gameplay, but what can we do about that.
SEX is like math. Add the bed, subtract the clothes, divide the legs, and hope you dont multiply
That IS part of the physics engine. You won't be able to blast away the stone in aztec but I'm sure the wood in militia will be just like the wood in HL2...
I've played the doom 3 alpha and the HL2 leaked game... I much prefer hl2 to doom 3.
Considering Doom III Alpha has barely anything to offer while the HL2 leaked almost has its own scenario and much less bugged beasts, I don't think you can judge it already.
BTW I was talking about visuals. No matter how good the HL2 visuals are, they simply are not going to touch Carmack's ability to bring forth true immersion. Hence why I said the Unreal 3 will change that.
Bah, D3 and HL2 are equal to me in the end, they're both going to kick ass, and none of you all should close your minds to either. I say both will deserve a solid 10. D3 most for immersion and scare factor, HL2 for the excitement and scenario.

I think Doom 3 might be a littler more advanced, technically-wise, but think Half-Life 2 will be superior in terms of it's ability to really get you into the game, like the first Half-Life. Half-Life 2 will be out a few months before Doom 3, right? I will buy Half-Life 2 no matter what, but I don't think I will buy Doom 3 unless it turns out to be super crazy good.

Well, I know when I'd play DOOM II, that was chilly enough sometimes.
D3 prefers the dark hallways approach. Considering the monsters in DOOM have always been truly refined (not saying the little jumping beasts in HL weren't, those made you jump though), I doubt you would not be gotten into the game as much. Seeing the IMPs, the Masterminds and other hell's demons back in, I'd say you're definitely going to get the bang for your buck. The Doom III approach is to use the limited hallways feeling, combined with some serious music for atmosphere, as well as 5.1 sound effects (I believe Carmack has claimed they will have the most optimized sound experience on PC yet). I seriously doubt it will fail at it. IIRC they have Trent Reznor for that part too.
I've seen the HL2 video though and am definitely excited. However it is NOT the same atmosphere, and I think I will play DOOM III if I want to look for scare factor, while HL2 when looking for adrenaline. (lots of monsters around or having town folks with you shooting at the enemy)

Did u play the first HL? Did you beat it? It got SO scary man, I dunno how many times I jumped off my chair or screamed like a little girl. Doom series just lacks any kind of real good plot...it's all just walk around, bang and shoot. The first HL had a more complex plot and tons of logical puzzles for how to get to someplace or defeat storms of enemies. HL2 I will also be buying definetly, doom I'll prolly get bored with real fast (as has been the case with all the dooms I've played).

Doom was outclassed by Serious Sam, and Serious Sam 2 will be coming out. It should be interesting.

Well, consider that Doom II was out in 1995, and had barely any real storyline to base on (as most PC games back then), and you would know why. Embedding a storyline into a game about 16MB big, at a time where 256MB hard drives were mainstream definitely didn't make sense. Nowadays Carmack has that ability. Then again, since when was there THAT much of a storyline in HL as well? I don't ever recall stopping and hearing long storylines. I remember also running around, finding new places on one big map for the game, helping out scientists who were to die eventually, etc.
Basically it was the new Doom of its era, if anything.
And you can definitely bet that the puzzles part will also be part of DOOM III. Else they would not also work on an advanced physics engine like almost any new game out there. I do have to fault Carmack for taking too much time to get it out though. The HL2 hype is there, that hurt its thunder a lot, I admit.
I do think however, your judgment is lacking here.

Now that I think of it, you did mention you started FPS' with HL, or it was one of your first big games. Guess I can't really try to convince you since first great experiences often result in a certain fervor. Same thing here for my first RPG for example, that the majority hated, but I stick by it no matter what and play it almost each year.

No. Wayyyy wayyyy back I played Doom 1, Wolfenstein or whatever it was called, and Hexen. HL was the first decent FPS I consider. And there was a more complex storyline as u got to screw up the world really. There were the aliens and then the military coming in to destroy all evidence. Finally, it was a fight for your survival against the g man, and the ending was creepy.

Probably, tho maybe it was funnier when I was being all manly carrying a hundred pound part of a tree in one hand and then I saw a little worm come out, screamed, and ran away. Lol.

Yeah, was it heretic-> hexen-> some other I forget? I know I played the first of that series, and then borrowed the others from my friend old school piracy!

I got to the end guy in HL but couldn't for the life of me kill him. I got some bad tips from a friend of mine on how to do it so I was doing it wrong all along.
I then found out how to do it, but this was on a new rig, so I just used some cheat codes to speed through the game and get to the end. I then passed it the real way
have you rread the toms article on stalker(chernobyl, i think) game??

they talk about the physics and how it works with their engine and it sound like it should be a pretty good game... graphicwise and storywise, ya know?
