Yamaha or Alto?

We are about to make a purchase of a mixing board. We will use it with
2-3 mics, guitar or two, bass, keyboard... etc.. but we want to have
room for expansion in the future. Currently we are looking at Yamaha
MG16 and Alto S-12, I am not really convinced about getting Alto if I
can get Yamaha for almost the same price. Have heard opinions that
Altos are not reliable as much as Yamaha, and the sound quality in
Altos is inferior. Could someone help me out on this one? What is your
opinion. Thanks a lot for your help.
