I need some feedback on rounding out the modest mic selection at my
project studio. Here are the ones I have:
Lawson L47mp
AT4050(pair)
AT4047
At 3035
AT4031 & 4041 pairs
Earthworks SRO omnis(pair)
various kick and dynamic mics(I'm covered there) I borrow other
things from time to time.
Preamps: Manley DVC, Focusrite Octopre, RNP, Soundcraft, Mackie,
Joemeek, Rane, roland
I do a lot of vocal things. The Lawson is my go-to. I'm mostly
unhappy with the drum overhead area and an occasional tough voice
where everything I have is a bit too crunchy. I think the lower end AT
4031s are going to go, 4051s look like a nice mic. I like doing 3 mic
drums so a single overhead that sounds balanced and natural is
attractive. I Like the idea of a Neumann 193 or similar. The Royer
121/122 is very interesting too. TLM 103, KSM32, Blue dragonfly, V69
tube, AKG?? these are things I've been recommended. I like used and
Ebay, haven't bought something new in a long time.
Any thoughts?
thanks in advance

Take a listen to a Blue Baby Bottle in place of the Dragonfly. I'd add
a Soundelux U195 to your collection as well. I've heard good things
about the MXL V69 and for less than 300 bucks you're not risking much
and besides you can always put it on ebay to get your money back if not
satisfied. My go to mic is a U195 and as of yet has not let me down. ;-)

I see that phrase around here a lot. How come I don't have one? I wish
I could nail down one of my mics as the likely first choice for
everything, but I can't. I have a variety of mics because each brings
something unique that makes it better suited to certain tasks than
others.
Have I just not purchased the right mic yet?

how about a coles 4038 or other ribbon?
they sound totally different than condensers and have advantages over
dynamics for some things.
get a good tube preamp and if it is old recap all of the electrolytics
and put NOS tubes in, as the ones you will get are probably worn and
will sound fuzzy etc.

What you have may be all you need, depending on what genre you record.
FWIW, I would get a ribbon, maybe a Beyer M160, and an EV RE20 large dynamic.
Some instruments and voices are gonna sound better with these than the
condensers you have. Also, you may want to look at some omni patterns like an
EV 635A small dynamic. These mics are very good recording mics and they're
under $500 each.
If you're doing drums sets, then I'd listen to the following:
SM-57; MD421; Audix D2, D4, D6; ATM25; AKG D112. All cardiod or hyper-cardiod
large or small dynamics.

My mic cabinet looks like yours, and I'm very happy with my Oktava mc012
matched pair, that ad a "color" to my "palette". Very good value for the
price.
Less hyped top than the 4041, more "naturel" sounding for acoustic
instruments like horns and strings.
I also use them often as drum overhead and stereo ac. gtr
I also had great results on a curved soprano sax, in m/s miking with one
Oktava as cardioid center, and a 4050 vertically mounted as up and down
"sides" .
The mastering engineer on this project could not believe how we got this
soprano sound!

You have no Neumann mics. If you want to attract new clients, you need
a couple to prove your legitimacy. It looks like you probalby don't
record drums or amplifieirs, just acoustic instruments and vocals. If
you're recording your own work or inviting friends in to feed your
recording habit, you probably have everything you need.

Thanks all! Some good suggestions. I have some nice dynamics like
ATM25, D112, P10, 57s, 58s, betas. It seems after reading and thinking
about it I need some character mics. I've heard that the Baby Bottle
is a nice role player mic. I'm scared of used Beyer ribbons but they
seem like something of intrest. I'm getting tired of the 4041s for
overheads as they have a smeared, slightly grainy sound. The Octavas
have been inconsistent to my ears. I really havent found a good pair
of Tom mics for a 4 piece drumset. ATM63s have done well. Borrowed a
beta56 which worked pretty well. Never had much luck with 421s...
anyhow, appreciate the suggestions.

If you use reasonable care in checking out the seller, you can find a
good used Beyer ribbon... or spend a little more and buy a used Royer.
I bought an M160 that works great off of ebay for $225 a couple of
years ago.

I live very far away, north, in Canada, and I was afraid to buy a pair of
mic that were not matched for stereo:
it seems that Oktavas are sometimes very different from one to the other,
so I paid a higher price but had confidence, very personal service and a
well working matched pair from The sound room.
It's the way to go for tha Oktavas...

You seem to already have a very nice selection of LD condensers and dynamics,
why would you need more? A TLM193 isn't gonna add much to your mic locker.
It's a nice mic, but I sold mine 'cause I didn't have enough uses for it and
that's a problem all of us have at times. If you have mics you don't use at
least every third session, you got to many mics or too much money. I finally
realized that even if I could spend a cool $500,000 on mics, there would be one
I would still be looking to buy.
What you don't have are ribbons and they can provide the "color" you're seeking
and certain advantages over condensers and dynamics in some applications.
I've got a Beyer M130, M160, M280DX and two M500's and I love 'em. They're 3-4
years old and never had a problem. If I do, Stephen Sank will fix them.
What's your hesitation with Beyer mics? Ask Scott Dorsey about 'em. He's the
one that pointed me to them originally. I really wanted a 77DX bit settled for
a Sank 77DX mod to the M280. It's very, very close.

I think I'd be looking for something that didn't start with "AT". Just for
a change....

Also, no tubes or ribbons there.
Try to audition a Rode K2, my 'flavour of the month" , or 6 months that is,
and still going strong.
I visited Wes Dooley at AEA and his prototype stereo ribbon mic was
wonderful. Some Neumanns, KM84s or if you want to spend the $$$ KM54
are great on overheads and will also be great on acoustic guitars.
>kellykellytunes@aol.com (kelly mcguire)

A TLM 103, or used U89 would be a nice alternative. But Neumanns sound
funky with the Mackie pres, so stay away from that combination.

You might try using your Earthworks Omnis over the kit, they can make your
cymbals sound smoother and the room sound larger. I usually use omnis with
more than 2 close mics though. A used pair of Neumann KM184's (unmatched is
generally ok) would be a nice addition sonically and to see in your gear list,
I think they're running about $400-$450 or so each on Ebay, a bit more maybe
with a nice box.

For a "tough voice" be willing to try a dynamic mic, like a Sennheiser MD
441, MD431 or MD421, or a Beyer M69 or M88, or a ribbon like a Beyer M500 or
260. The MD 441 is great, the 431 has the same capsule, and the rest all
mellow out harshness pretty well.
