Networking Win 7

Hello,
I have just purchased a laptop and want to network it with my desktop.
I originally set the laptop as a work group but I found out I couldn,t communicate with tne desktop. All sharing is set up. Do I need to uninstall as a work group and put it as home group? Or can someone get me going in the right direction?
