i recently acquired a pro tools system (project card, 882 I/O, mac
9600). i copied the hard drive to my other system so i could clean it
up and update the OS. much to my dismay, the pro tools software looks
for the "signature on the hard drive"(so sayeth the folks at
digidesign.) of course, i didn't get the authenticator disks and can't
get the registration transferred so digidesign will give me the disk i
need. finally, my question: will any other software work with this
hardware? can i put the pci card in my G3 blue and white? or did i
just purchase a very large paper weight?

any help is appreciated.

You can use the hardware with other software, Cubase, Studio Vision,
Digital Performer. The software version you need depends on what system you
are running, and you need the correct Digi System init and DAE extensions -
they are available free at Digi's website. You may also download the Digi
Sound Manager extension, which will limit you to 2 channels of I/O but be
useful for mixing down if you want to use plug ins.

If you are running a Mac system older than OS9, you can go to
http://www.opcode.com/ and download Studio Vision 4.51, which works with your
hardware after you install the Digi extensions. You can also download OMS for
Midi. If you are using OS9, you need the newer Acadia drivers that you can
find here
http://www.fm-music.com/v/setup/setup.html

If you use the Acadia drivers and a Digi sound manager extension so your
normal computer audio comes plays through the Digi hardware, you can use older
vst plug ins. If you use the DAE you have no plug in capabilities with your
system, but you do have a multi track recorder with 8 analog in and 8 analog
out, and 2 digital ins and outs.

Be sure to print out the manual and read it!
Good luck.

Did I mention Studio Vision is *free*, as it is a discontinued product? I
figured you might find that a useful option.
