How important is an 8meg cache?

I don’t need a 100+ gig drive, but is it worth getting one just for the 8meg cache? What exactly does that do for you?

I think its worth it but its up to you. Most of the time you probably won't notice much difference.

if you dont want 100gb then dont get it.
go for the 80Gb 800JB.
personally i love my 8mb cache drive.
very zippy.

and if you look at the benchmarks the 8mb of cache transforms the drive from average to above average.

most intensive apps will be games, the rest will be the usual stuff, internet, mp3s, business apps etc.

May as well go for the 100MB drive. Gives you a bit of headroom, especially as your MP3 collection grows.

I was thinking about that but couldn't I just burn it to a CD and not need to keep it on my HDD? I still might just get that 80 gig with the 8 meg cache, I noticed it at new egg right after I posted. But still, what does an 8 meg cache exactly do? Hold frequently accessed data to speed up reading?

BTW, it's 80 GIGABYTES not 80 MEGABYTES. 80MB was good 15 years ago.

yeah basically. course its more complex than that. but with my 800JB ive really noticed the difference copying small files and indexing directories and loading games

Before you consider buying that 80GB drive go here

There is a slight decrease in performance of the 80GB drive when compared to the original 8mb cache 100 and 120 GB drives...you should check it out.
