Some of you will remember that I am a big fan of the Symmetrix 501
compressor/limiter---depending on the version.

Long and McQuade, here in Toronto, have one with the toggle/power switch
which tells me it has a nice Valley People VCA inside. It is in their
"$100 or less" rack, which puts it at $75 USD.

That's a steal.

Anyone who wants a very useable compressor call them---416-588-7886.

Even the non-toggle version (501a) is a fine compressor with almost none
of the typical artifacts.

Please refresh my RAM, how does it compare to the RNC?

I cannot slight the RNC for what it is. It's an *outstanding* little box. I still
have two in my church's rack and have owned four over the past few years.

One could obtain a couple of mono channels of Symetrix and find a wee
bit more flexibility... like XLR or 1/4" ins and outs, an optional 'limiter' side,
no wall wart, little to no artifacts, and true stereo operation if linked or if
using a stereo version like the 522. I'd say it works along the lines of the
RNC in "super-nice" mode, but tends to have a wee bit more forgiveness
in the event of accidental overcompression. They're pretty close, but I find
two independent channels to be more flexible than one linked pair. It's a
very tough call here though, because were are comparing ten (+) year old
gear with a relatively new item.

There are several extremely usable Symetrix models from that era... the
522, the 501 or 501a, the CL-150 "fast RMS", and more.

Another 'sleeper' comp is the Ashly CL-52E, now available used at about
the same price as the Symetrix stuff... both of which were considerably
more expensive when new, and come in at about 1/2 the price of a new
RNC. Again, I love the little RNC, but I'd rather have 4 true stereo (dual
mono) channels of CL-52 as apposed to two permanently linked channels
on an RNC for flexibility reasons.

I bought a pair of the current model CLX-52 about two years ago ($399 ea)
and sold them right away... too many bells and whistles, overly sensitive
adjustment knobs, and little to no forgiveness in the area of pumping and
coloration.

Try the older CL-52E. Even Fletcher has given this one a thumbs-up.
