Hey, all. I have an ailing Tascam DA-P1 portable DAT that has been quite
good to me over the couple of years I've owned it. One evening at a gig,
I popped in a DAT, the display registered "TAPE", and then the whole
unit locked. It won't do anything with any tape put in it, in fact I
have to manually eject (paperclip method...*wince*) anything put in the
deck, since once it's powered up any button pressed just flashes "TAPE"
on the display. Needless to say, finishing that gig was a bit of a
challenge!

I'd like to get it repaired, since it's my digital backup for doing
location recording (which forms the bulk of my recording 'work'). Does
anyone know of a reliable, reputable place to take it? I'd prefer
something in the Los Angeles area that I could drive it to, but if
anyone has recommendations for the U.S. in general, I'm willing to ship
it insured if it means the little guy will get good treatment.

Thanks in advance...

Tascam's service department in Montebello would be a good option.

Heh. OK, I feel dumb--didn't realize they were local. I'll give 'em a ring.

Well TEAC is in the Los Angeles area, but for what it's worth, I sent
my DA-P20 to them for repair and they returned it saying they didn't
have the parts. Given that yours is newer, they might have what it
takes.

Eddie Celett (http://www.tangible-technology.com)i can probably
work on it, but it will probably cost you $500. Unless you're losing
money by not having it, it's doubtful that you'll ever get $500 more use
out of it. That's why mine is in the boneyard (I think I know someone
who can use the battery) and why I'm still waiting for the right portable
digital recorder to come along.
