Got my used 650U up and running and recording fine on CD-RW 74 min disks
from both digital and analog sources. However, get a "failed" message when
it tries to initialize 80 min Sony CD-R's. Rather than go out an spend more
money for test disks that I may not be able to use (and so far nobody local
seems to carry 74 min CD-R's which makes it particularly hard), can anybody
tell me here whether the problem is due to 80 mins (I suspect it is, as the
deck is circa 1998) or to something else specific to the Sony brand (which
is rated for players 1x - 48x).
If anybody here is using this model Marantz, I'd appreciate knowing the
specifics of the CD-R blanks you find work well with it, and if possible,
also your source of supply.
Thanks.

It's the speed, not the capacity. I've had trouble with computer store
CD-R blanks in my TASCAM CDRW-5000 and am now successfully (so far)
using Taiyo Yuden 80 min Silver blanks. They're rated at 52x but they
don't work at 52X in the one computer CD-RW drive I have that will do
that speed. However, they work in the TASCAM recorder and that's what
counts. I bought them from Media Supply (web site obvious).

Thanks Mike. I've wondered about that. I can record 74min CD-RW's but
don't want to do that for archiving (in addition none of my other cd players
can use, and "yes" I have finalized. These are Sony's rated 1-4x. The Sony
CD-R's are rated 1-52x...they were the only ones with a stated lower limit
and I bought them assuming they accordingly would work. But they do no.
