I`m selling a Telefunken Magnetophon record setup on ebay. It contains
two V98 tube amplifiers and the complete wiring to a tape recorder.

The model is V98 and was supposable made in the late fourties or early
fifties.

The V98 was originally designed as a record / playback amplifier for
the rare and very early Telefunken R65 Tape recorder . The housing
reminds of the legendary V41 V41a and V41b micpre of the thirties
which was produced up to the fifties and was replaced by the legendary
V72 and later the V76 microphone preamp.
The V41 era is also reflected in the tube assignment. The V98 has uses
also 3 EF12K tube like the V41. But besides others it contains also 2
EF804S which are responsible for the amazing technical data of the V72
V76 and V78 .
The well known and highly sought V86 and V87 record / playback tube
amps were the follower of the V98. They are nowadays also used as
micpres. The V98 offers the same application with the sound character
of the V41.

Actually this item is a complete electronic set for a 2 track tape
recorder. It contains 2 x V98 amplifiers + the complete wiring with
all connectors including the ones for the tape recorder. Besides the
R65 you can combine this set also with a Telefunken T9 M10 M10a M15
and I`m sure an experieced technician can prepare this item also for
mastering tape recorders from Studer Otari Ampex 3M Lyrec Tascam
Fostex MCI and others.
The 2 connectors for the tape recorder are 16 pin Siemens (or Tuchel
Amphenol ) versions. The 4 connectors for the 2 V98 units are 8 pin
design. And these are the highly sought pieces of all german
connectors. They were also used for all faders up to the sixties, for
example Maihak BW44 B-W44 W66c W65a and the most of the product line
from Eckmiller and EMT and probaly also the earl Danner units. Its
pretty likely that also Klangfilm used this connector type. I value
only this 4 pieces at minimum $ 200,-.
If I go on pricing the parts I can charge $ 300,- for the tube set of
one amp. This contains: 3 x EF12 ( EF12K ), 1 x EDD11 , 2 x EF804S. If
I rate the mass of transformers (indubitable super high quality) its
easy to cross the $ 1.000,- border. And that`s for one of these units
!!!

The condition:
Due to its age the condition is absolutely mint. Obviously not a
single component was changed. The expert knows that tubes of this era
can easily reach an age of 60 years and more because of their
unbelieveble high quality. By the way, also the german Wehrmacht was
producing and using the EF12 tube.
Unfortunately I own no matching tape recorder anymore. So I could not
test the units. I didn`t want to change the original wiring (ok, first
I thought of and installed 2 female XLR for the input). The output
connector is a big Tuchel 3 pin receptacle which is installed directly
on the output transformer. Those connectors were also used for the
most of the microphones from Telefunken Neumann Sennheiser from the
fourties to the seventies. For example the MD421 MD441 M611 U87 U89
M410 …..
Summing I have to say I cannot guarantee the proper functioning of the
units but due to its appearance it will work in all probability.
Otherwise it must be easy to fix it.
This set was originally used in this configuration. Its needless to
say that the units are rearly matched ! The serial numbers are 049 and
074 !!!
