My Maxtor 40gig hard drive says that it is a ATA/100 hard drive. Now I understand that the ATA/66/100/133 improve the hard drive performance.

But do you have to install any software to make it a ATA/100 drive?

Your motherboard must support ATA100.
You can check the speed it's running at during boot-up, when it displays your system's information.
