Going Steamless with HL2

I have resisted purchansing Half Life 2 until now, because I simply
don't want to be forced to install STEAM. So I wanted to find out if it
was possible yet to have a steamless install. It took a bit of looking
around, but it does seem that its now possible to do. So I will finally
purchase the game and play it the way I want, instead of the way Valve
wants me too.

Because it was a bit of a hunt to find out how to do it, I thought I
would post a couple of useful links for others wanting similar
flexibility. For detailed instructions see
http://www.mgforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=242122&postcount=2752 and

http://www.steamlessproject.nl/

The Steamless Project also has interesting information about the
legality of doing this and the details to go Steamless with CS.

Please be aware that by going steamless with HL2 you will be commiting
a grave sin!!

A sin that cannot ever be forgiven!!!
Steam and HL2 is the perfect marriage of technology and art!!

I biggest draw back to this is the fact that you can't patch your game
without Steam. And the game needs patching. It's had at lest three patches
so far that have been very important to help with the games stuttering
problems and other bugs fixes. The patches where a big help for me. The last
one helped with performance and a stutter bug when you quicksave. On my PC
these fixes made a big improvement. JLC

That's true, but the good people at the Steamless project already have
the Half-Life 1.1.1.1 Update available for download. So I don't see it
as such a problem...

Rubbish. Some had issues with stuttering at auto save points and the
(piss poor) squad levels ata the end of the game, but overrall its
relatively bug free and certainly playable.

4/10 for trolling.

How the hell can you consider that the be a troll post? It was a
completely reasonable reply to the OP. If anything Walt your foaming
response to any slight criticism of Steam/HL2 is making *you* come across as
a troll.

that patch is for HL1 not HL2 - I doubt they'll supply patches for HL2 as
easily. however playing the game without Steam may make it play better
anyway.

Thanks Morgan, I have Mitty killfiled so I didn't see his post tell JL
replied to it. It blows my mind how stupid these two guys are at times. All
one has to do is go to the Steam forums to see that there is a lot more then
a "few people" that have had huge problems with HL2. I consider JL and WM to
be the true trolls of this NG when it comes to anything HL2 (that dfool guy
is to insane to count). I haven't killfiled JL yet because he sometimes has
something to say other then ranting about Steam. Since HL2 has come out this
group has gone down hill fast. It's a shame that these few people are trying
to ruin this group for everyone else. Thank God for killfiles. JLC

didn't know about the steamlessproject, its very good although its
multiplayer oriented and i think a similar project but for single
player is also extremely necessary, so i hope one will soon appear

as for buying hl2, i'll keep saying NO to valve even with the crack
i want a steam free proper retail version of hl2, only this way will
i ever pay money for it
don't get me wrong... but a real gamer will resist hl2 unless dirty
valve takes steam away
for me its a matter of principles, so i will not give money to valve
so they can create even more intrusive, monopolist measures in games

all the money valve is getting for hl2 will be used for doing an even
more evil version of steam

nevertheless thanks a million man! you're a cool dude DD! and please
keep posting good stuff!

If you cant recognise a troll dolled up then theres something wrong with
your reading comprehension.

"And the game needs patching".

Easy.

The game does not need patching to play. WOuld you adisagree or not?

If you think that that sounded anything like a troll then it's *your
*reading comprehension that you need to be looking at. Fair criticism !=
troll. Prasing the patches != troll.

Also do phrases such as "these fixes made a big improvement" and "The
patches where a big help for me." really sound like they're coming from a
troll?

No one said that the games needs to be patched in order to *play* it, the it
was said that it needed the patches to iron out the stuttering problem and
improve performance. I.e. it needs patching to get the most enjoyment out
of it. That would be the whole reading comprehension thing that you
mentioned.

Any game that has *any* bug needs patching. I'm fully awar of the diverse
hardware out there, so I don't expect games to be bug free on all computers
on the day of release. But if I'm spending £35 of my money then, I expect
any bugs in the software to be patched as soon as possible.

*need* is the key here. Also, I think we've crossed lines - I was
referring to the full thread and the OP as much as the patching being
required issue.

"I have resisted purchansing Half Life 2 until now, because I simply
don't want to be forced to install STEAM."

He also goes on to post links to pirated copies which can work without
Steam verification. You are endorsing this? I thought not.

We all know SW has bugs and needs patching. My point is that HL2 is
perfectly playble out of the box for the great majority and that it may
not *need* patching.

I'm not being a fanboi etc here. Just realistic.

You can patch your game without Steam. The only difference is that the
patches don't come directly from Valve.

Wally has 5 letters in his name.
Lewis has 5 letters in his name.

Wally has the letter L in his name.
Lewis has the letter L in his name.
(note: Lewis use to have two L but I think Wally stole one of them)

Wally has the letter W in his name.
Lewis has the letter W in his name.

I'm beginning to suspect that the two are actual one in the same person.

Wally's real first name is John.
Lewis's first name is John.

Sorry to disappoint you. I am not schitzo...

Wally Twitty ain't me.... I don't get no retainer from Gabe.

Howver, if Gabe slipped me a few spare grand, or a spare

my principles, of course.

That would be interesting. How do you do it?
