Hi there

I am trying to boot from a dos boot-able usb stick to flash bios for my Dell Inspiron N5010 but it either displays black screen with C:\>_

and if I try to start Windows normally the screen just keeps on flashing but nothing loads.

Kindly help !

did you expand the bios files and copy them over to the usb stick. most times when you see the c:| prompt you booted into dos. you then do the old dir command to list files. if the usb stick is now the c drive you should see the bios exe file to run it.

I would think that the C:\> is just what you're looking for. It is the DOS prompt that you would get from a DOS bootable drive. Try listing the files at the DOS prompt and look for the BIOS flash executable and then run it.

At the DOS prompt, run the file typing "N5010A15.EXE" without the quotes. This assumes you have the latest BIOS A15 on the USB drive.

Nothing to expand in Dell's flash update file for this PC. It is not a self-extracting file, rather, it is the BIOS flash executable.
