Guess what this foolish old man did last week??
I "pre-ordered" the new YAMAHA CRW-F1 with Yamaha's Exclusive DiscT@2™ Laser Labeling System. It should be shipping on August 1st. (It already hit my charge card!) An expensive toy? I certainly hope not...... I'll keep this post active with "progress reports". Hey, please be kind to this old man..... don't keep telling me I SHOULD have bought a Lite-On ......

WARNING: The DiscT@2 "label writing" feature DOES NOT work well at all !! It is so very, very faint. I first thought it was because I did NOT use a "genuine" YAMAHA CDR disc, but even using the sample CDR they provided helped only slightly over the Memorex blanks I first used. The image "burned" is a JOKE ...... I really thought it would work..... Yamaha is laughing at ME now (as P.T. Barnum said, years ago!)
I do, however, like the QUALITY of the AUDIO CD recording, and THIS is the main reason I chose Yamaha over Plextor. I am also having a great deal of difficulty obtaining CD-RW BLANKS that qualify for 24X. Forget about local stores like CompUSA, Staples, etc. Even on Web I CANNOT find 'em, so I go directly to Yamaha WEB Store and guess what...... NO 24X CD-RW blanks for sale !! Hmmmmmmm, what did I do wrong this time .... All I did was "pre-pay" $200+ to Yamaha, back in July, and wait over a month for this CRW-F1 !! :-(

24X discs? I don't even see 12X discs on the shelves?

As for DiscT@2 have you tried the dark blue/green, cyanine discs (not the best quality granted).

I gots a LO and a TDK and both are good stuff. Still I'm jealous of your Yam. I buy Verbatium 32x disks at Sam's club for under 50 cents a piece. How big of a font did you use when you burned the tatoo? Perhaps you need a really bright pin spot above your system.

Give me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire.

I am talking about CD-RW ("ReWritable") 24X DISCS.......... NOT just CD-R !! Is this what you buy at Sam's ?? Most RW's are 10X or 12X.

The YAMAHA is great for CD AUDIO dupes, as it has 1.4m (vs 1.2m on all other CD recorders) which does make better quality recording at the expensise of LESS data space (total time). See, with YAMAHA, a 74 minute disc produces only 63 mins. audio and an 80 minute only 68 minutes !!

I tried LARGE, BOLD, DARK FONTS...... remember, you can ONLY "burn" into the OUTER band of "unused date space". In all actuality this means about a 1/4" to 3/8" ring around the CD to make your "label" (or tatoo as some call it !!)

The following is a REPLY from YAMAHA, to my questions about 24X RW Media -and- the NON-WORKING DiscT@2. They responded within 24 hours of my question, and they provided "honest" answers:

Wendell,

We expect to be shipping 24X CRW media and Special DiscT@2 media by Mid-Sept. The DiscT@2 works best on older low speed CDs with Blue dye. Our DiscT@2 media will be 16X and Blue dye.

Of course, you know you can deactivate that and use regular burning length.
