Had a quick look through the groups.google, but couldn't find anything on
this...
I'm wondering if anyone can give me an idea of how important it is to have a
matched pair of these mics (AKG 451EB) for grand piano recording. I know
some mics are naturally very close and don't need to be matched for stereo
work, but I don't know about these.

If you are doing distant miking of the whole room for something that is
going to be used solo, it is important. But in that case, you probably
don't want to be using the 451.
If it's for close-miking of the piano for tracks that will be integrated
with other tracks in a panpot-stereo mix, it's not important at all.

I'm with Scott... used these for piano a great deal when miking somewhere
up close or especially inside the parameter of the lid, and if you're adding
the results to a greater whole... no sweat.

I admit they aren't ideal for this, but I have done this a number of times.
Unless you are talking about the noise. They are less than ideal when
it comes to self noise.

If you're really using them as stereo pairs in X/Y, ORTF or other configs,
yes. You don't HAVE to do that, but some like to. It may help the stereo
image, if that's important to you.
