Those that charge out-of-the-box are the ones without the Universal
connector, they have the mini-USB.
You can't charge thru the UC using just USB because the wiring is not
connected to the correct pins. I do not know if the USB power is
sufficient, or the battery charge control circuit smart enough. The mini
USB supplied units where designed specifically to handle the USB power
issues.

Hope this helps.

As does my T3, but you do need the proper cable. Some USB-->Palm UC cables
do not supply power to the Palm. Don't know why this is but I bought a cable
at Radio Shack and it will not charge the T3. Synchs just fine but no
charging.
Yes, I use a box wave 'minisync' cable for my T3 which allows syncing and
charging via USB. I leave my cradle at home and take the small boxwave cable
into the office.

No connection other than as a satisfied user. 10 out of 10.

...and you can get a mains adaptor to connect your USB cable to, so you can
charge from the mains without using the cradle. I got mine from Proporta in
the UK, and it's terrific!

Let it stay with the cable attached, it should charge just fine. My T3
charges just fine from standard cradle with disconnected power supply.
There are some specifics, though. Looks like Palm T3 can charge directly
from USB power, without additional wire. But, it does this only while in
sleep mode and at much slower pace. You can check this by watching T3
green led. If power is connected the led goes on right after Palm is
placed in the cradle. If power is not connected, then led still goes on,
but only after Palm turns itself off. Checking battery level time to time
shows that Palm is charging.

The cable I bought from Radio Shack will not charge the unit no matter how
long it stays connected. I have another USB->UC cable that works just fine.
I haven't taken the RS cable apart but I am guessing that not all the pins
are connected between the USB and UC connectors.

My T3 charges fine with just the power from the USB bus.
Really? Mine charges quite quickly. In fact, it hasn't been in the
cradle since I bought it, I charge it exclusively via the USB cable
(since it's more portable).
