DivX playback jerky

I´m just curious if you have the same "problem" as I have when
it comes to playing DivX movies directly from the CD/DVD drive.

When I run the movie from the harddrive there is no jerkiness
whatsoever, perhaps that´s not so hard to understand as the
hd is "fast".

However, as soon as I play it from the cd or dvd the movie
all too often stops and it seems like it searches for the track
for a second or so...very disturbing.

My question, should not a cdrom with 40+ spin speed be
able to read a DivX movie?
I mean, it´s not mb/s we´re talking about here, more
like kb/s...or am I wrong?

Does it have something to do with the way the movie is
stored on the cd?
Like as if the data is scattered over the cd in no particular order
or something?
If so...is there a way to remedy this, other than converting it
to SVCD or something equally unwanted?

Please, someone explain how this works for me!

Oh, I have a fairly new system...XP1600, 512Mb RAM, DMA checked etc etc.

2 things:

1 is dma enabled on your cd?

2 sometimes "fast" cds can be slower then "slow" cds because they take longer to ramp up. Nero allows a max speed setting that can make playback smoother by setting the max speed SLOWER.

Ok, well...DMA is enabled and as for the cd´s, I have
tried maybe 4-5 different brands like TDK, noname, Verbatim etc.
Still the same results.

I don´t get what you mean with Nero, you mean that I shall try to burn
the cd´s slower or what?
My drive is capable of burning in 24x, and I have tried to lower it to 16x, mainly
because I´m on the net, DC, running winamp and soulseek at the same time.

No don't burn slower unless the fast burn is causing errors on the disk. Using Nero you can set the max READ speed for a drive. Let me give you an example from the DVD world: Pretend you have a fast 16x DVD player that goes really fast once it gets going but takes a few seconds to ramp up, now suppose you want to RIP a DVD and copy it to a HD. You want this to happen as fast as possable so you set the Max speed to the max speed your drive will go. Once the player ramps up to 16x you will make a rip in no time (15 min). Now suppose you want to use the same player to VIEW a DVD in real time. The DVD player going 16x does not help because for a 2 hour movie the player needs to be running for about 2 hours anyway. In this case running the player at roughly 1x is actually smoother. The disk would run at a slow speed for 2 hours straight. At 16x the drive is spinning up and filling a read buffer and then slowing down until the buffer is close to empty and the speeding up and slowing down for 2 hours. Spmetimes the buffer can run out. This will not happen if you slow the drive down. Same thing applies to cdrs with movies on them except even more cause they go 40 or 50x and have smaller buffers.

Also if the burn speed is too high you may have trouble reading. I burn at 16x max with a 40x burner using 24x disks. It only takes about 5 min to burn at 16x and 16x is the fastest my drive will go without going into zone speeds (I think).

Ok, thanks...how do I slow my drive down then?
11.2 Nero DriveSpeed
You can use Nero DriveSpeed to set the read speed of CD drives already
installed. The program is in the Nero Toolkit and is started as follows: Start >
Programs > Ahead Nero > Nero Toolkit > Nero DriveSpeed.
This program is a component part of Nero because the noises it produces as
drive speed increases had become louder and louder and we needed a program
which could deal with this problem. If a program does not take long to load the
noise level of the drive might not be an issue but with constant access to a CD
this will be perceived as interference. However a brake can be installed simply
by setting the read speed.
Another problem which is particularly annoying when using game CDs/DVDs
arises from the shutting down of the drive motor and the slow restarting of the
motor which can lead, on the one hand, to the program freezing for a short time
and, on the other hand, to some drives supplying incorrect data during startup.
By using Nero SpeedDrive you can avoid this problem and define the spin
down time, i.e. the empty running time, according to which the drive sets the
rotation.
The "program" icon appears in the tray icon field in the task bar after startup,
usually at the lower right edge of the screen.
11.2.1 Using Nero DriveSpeed
1. Double click on the program icon for Nero DriveSpeed. If you have not yet
set speed parameters for the recognized drives a dialog box appears asking
you to set the parameters by clicking on the OK button.
2. As the window appears click on the Autodetect button to have the speed
settings of Nero DriveSpeed detected. If too many speeds (more than 6)
have been detected those not required may be deleted. This is done by
selecting and clicking on the Remove button. In the "Language" sector you
may define the language in which entries are to appear.
3. Click on the OK button to save the settings and close the sector.
4. Define the read speed of the drive by clicking on the drop down button and
selecting the desired speed.
5. By clicking on the drop down button and selecting the desired spin down time
you can define the empty run time by which the drive is to set the rotation
(default setting: 2 minutes)
6. In the three control boxes define whether Nero Drive Speed
Will be started when the computer is booted up
Will be started and minimized
The last saved values are to be used when booting up.

Lol!, I´ll you had to say was "NeroDriveSpeed"

Anyway...thanks for the info, I tried it and it works perfectly now, wohoo!
