I am planning to buy a Pinnacle ProONE video editing card which requires a second HDD for the video editing. I thought about a WD1200JB, but this drive has a seek time of 8.9 ms and Pinnacle asks for a HDD with less than 8 ms.

Does anybody know or has experience if the overall performance of the WD1200JB is good enough to cover Pinnacle's request? If not, is there an alternative I should have an eye on?

Thanks in advance.

cheers,

D.

i would have to say as long you you have the cpu and ram power to back the hdd up youll be fine, the 8mb buffer should help along with latency

It seems that every time I reboot my wallet gets smaller.

I can tell you that Western Digital is very conservative at rating their drives. My drive scores about 7.8ms seek time in Sandra.

You could look at the SCSI hard drive option although they are expensive in comparison to IDE drives, they have smaller capacities unless you are willing to hand over megadollars for a large SCSI drive. Seek times on some models of SCSI HD's are sub 5ms and they come in 8mb and 4mb cache sizes.

The WD1200JB HD you mentioned is an excellent drive and as mentioned before if it is set-up in a good working environment I could do the job, however if seek times are mission critical then have a look around before deciding on the SCSI option. Happy hunting
