Second Sight for the PC

Second Sight for the PC came out late last month at a bargain bin price
of $20. It was a console game a few months ago but the PC budget price
probably reflects console sales returns allowing for a lower price for
the PC version rather than an indicator of how good it is.

It does have a few console carry overs and if you absolutely can't
tolerate any console aspects at all, then skip it. It has level saves
with intermediate check point saves that are lost if you quit before
completing the level plus the auto targeting lock is very dicey, taking
quite a bit of fiddling to become accustomed to with any skill. It is
mainly a third person player view that can go into first person view
for aiming or close look but can't be moved while in first person view
mode. There are some other console like characteristics where the
opposition will stop looking for you fairly easily. But if you can
overcome or get used to some of these niggling aspects plus need a game
to fill in a dry spell, this is a very fun game that is well done with
a lot of things to like.

The graphics are not meant to be totally realistic but are very good,
done in a caricature style with some element styles similar to Time
Splitters, Hitman and Armed and Dangerous.

The main theme of the game is that you are a reluctant hero with
unknown psychic powers. As almost every game starts these days, you
wake up not knowing who you are, how you got there or what you are
supposed to be doing. The game does a good job of introducing you to
your psychic powers, presenting situations which act like a mini
training session then moving on to a level that requires use of your
new found powers.

As you progress, you learn more about yourself through flashbacks and
encounters with different people. In some respects, the flashback story
development is kind of fresh and a little discomforting, as it is
intended to be. In the end, the way the story develops to the final
scene may not be totally satisfying but there is a good wrap up.

Generally, the path is fairly linear, going from place to place but
often there are more than a few ways to make your way through different
situations. There is a fair amount of stealth required, using regular
mechanisms of wall hugging, crouching, and shadow hiding but psychic
powers are acquired to bring some new and different approaches to
different stealth situations. Then again, a lot of times, it is easier
to just blast your way through levels, although there are a few places
that this will result in endless spawning of opponents. There is an
escort section towards the middle and this might be pretty patience
challenging for some, trying to keep the fairly helpless companion
alive.

The psychic powers can be quite a bit of fun to play with on their own
and there are places where you can trap some poor sap in a room alone
and experiment on them in all kinds of ways. Most reviews of the game
have been good and it is probably a 7 to 8 out of 10 overall. It won't
be everyone's cup of tea but a very good deal at the price. The game
ran fine for the most part, there are a few bugs and collision
detection quirks, some people might experience a crash or two. Check it
out, the psychic powers and some of the weapons are worth the price of
admission on their own.
