I am thinking of getting a DAW, as I am outgrowing my Fostex 8 channel
board.
The Akai DSP seems to meet my needs (12 inputs), and from what i read
of the the reviews has better quality stuff (preamps, EQ) as opposed
to lots more effects in the simlarly priced Roland. There is a DAP BB
http://p206.ezboard.com/fdpsworldfrm3, and reading though that, this
board seems to be what I am looking for.
Does anybody have enough expereince with this board to have an
opinion.
Mostly I will be recording jazz, often live, groups of all sizes. I
have lots of mics, and 7 channels of pre-amps from Symetrix 202s up to
a Grace 101 and a John Hardy M1. Still looking for the perfect (cheap)
reverb.

I have an Akai DPS16 and have considered upgrading to the DPS24 although
the DPS16 does everything I need it to do. You might want to go here to
get the answers to your questions. http://p206.ezboard.com/bdpsworld Hope this helps.

Willie,
I recently switched to the DPS24, after a couple of years with the Yamaha
AW16G. The improvement in sound quality was astonishing. The Akai is 24/96
(variable) vs Yamaha 16/44.1 of course, but in addition to that, the overall
"feel" of the DPS24 just breathes, it is very open, with really nice
headroom. I immediately found I could mix by ear rather than by eye.
The builtin pre's do indeed sound good. It has 4 direct ADC inserts to run
your external mic preamps, plus tons of other digital and analog I/O. You
can record 24 tracks simultaneously by using some additional outboard
preamps.
I mainly was switching to get away from the AW16G I/O and space limitations,
other than that it was a very decent machine to learn on. But this sound
quality improvement was an unexpected bonus, highly recommended. Full
automation, 100 mm faders, no fan, made of good solid met-al...
For ease of use/cost-effectiveness I like the TC Electronic M300 as outboard
reverb. The Akai has decent effects, not "gimmicky" though. Come on over
to the ezboard, some of the Akai developers hang around there too, they can
give you way more details esp. comparing to Roland.
I used 2 sync'd up DPS16 's (for 32 tracks) with good results...however, I
have since upgraded to Nuendo with RME converters and that was a huge
improvement in sound quality (and headroom)...so, IMO, go with a DAW with
Nuendo..
YMMV..
