I am just to build my new system. I want your opinion for a CD ROM Drive. I am considering Acer and Asus at the moment and want to choose one of them. All what I need is stability along with performance.
Thanks in anticipation.

Asus makes VERY GOOD (if not THE BEST, considering Teac and Toshiba) optical drives. Their drives are fast, very silent and very reliable. They're incomparable to Acer (or BenQ recently) which to put it mildly, are very unreliable IME.
This is discussed many times here. Check older posts to find out more!

Sony, Toshiba, and Asus are what I would recommend.

Might as well get a dvd drive. It reads cd's, and usually runs at a higher udma mode. You can find some that run mode4, but most run at least mode3.

What the average life should be of a best CD ROM Drive like Toshiba and Teac as compared to Asus and Acer etc.

Ditto, a LO 16/48 dvd/cdr is only around $40 delivered.

I third (or quadruple.. whatever) that. DVD drives do both and are cheap. As for a reliable CD-ROM I used to have an annoying Kenwood that was awesome in the first few months before it broke down. Then I went with a Toshiba at the advice of some of the people in this forum (a year ago) and it's been working wonderfully. It's a bit on the loud side but completely tolerable since it has two modes: a silent mode for playing music CD's and a loud mode for reading data. I'm sure a DVD drive would fulfill your needs much better anyway.

I don't know what the average life is, but my Toshiba 48x is going strong after almost 2 years. My Creative 52x, on the other hand, died within a couple of months.

I'd also skip just the cd-rom and go for the dvd-rom. If you go for just a cd-rom, then try to stay away from creative.

For CD- TEAC. They are the more durable drives.
But you'd better buy a DVD - for several $ more, you'll get the newest technology.
