Can a game/virus cause my hard drive to fail?

Hi all,

I recently installed a game application which I believe may have contained viruses/malware.
Later on I got a hard disk S.M.A.R.T. 301 error, and had to replace my disk... :(

Just asking, but can applications cause the error I described above, and the hard drive to fail? Do they have anything to do with 301 error I got?

Thanks a lot.

    Hi :)

NO...in 99% of cases a smart fail is a physical error....

    All the best Brett :)
