There is a rumor that's spreading right now that dell has the
intention to acquire palmone as part of its competitive animosity
towards HP.

Although iPaqs have been gaining market share, according to analysts, I
suspect the margin per unit sold is razor thin, and smaller than that for
manufacturers who sell Palm Powered devices. Almost all profits from the
sale of personal computers, for example, go to Microsoft and Intel, and
only a sliver to HP, Dell, etc.

HP and Dell both produce PPCs. I'm not sure what difference Palm hardware
would make in the PPC arena.

This intrigued me:

"According to marketing guru Al Ries, in the long run, every market
becomes a two-horse race. Coke and Pepsi. Hertz and Avis. Gerber and
Beechnut."

Is it really that bad in the US? Does consumer choice always end up that
limited? I can't imagine only ever having a two-way choice.

I'm in the UK. I presume this is because of a difference in our monopoly
laws (ie no company is allowed to control more than 30% of the market)?

Wow, that would put a really fresh perspective on businesses here.

No, it's not that limited. There are lots of other cola brands, auto rental
companies, and baby foods. But it does tend to shake down to around 2 major
companies which control more than half the market between them, and a number
of other relatively minor companies, although I think Mr Ries exaggerates
somewhat. If you want to sell a book, you must get some attention-grabbers
in there.

US tradition has been more in the line of watching to see that companies
that possess a monopoly or near-monopoly do not abuse it. No "if you
wish to buy this you must also buy this" deals, no large volume
discounts that cannot be justified by the convenience, no discounts
contingent on not dealing with the competition.... None of Microsoft's
behavior, in other words.

Naturally, when the government is corrupt, this strategy fails completely.

Large mergers, however, are watched. The ongoing French merger of
Aventis and Sanofi would not have been permitted in the US -- but the
French government is doing this one deliberately -- /la gloire/, "This
old man thinks he's St. Joan" and all that sort of thing.

You guys in the UK would be able to hear the screams all the way from
Redmond, Washington were that the case.

Man, now *that* is a pleasant image.

I'm sorry you must've misunderstood the UK laws and the market
realities; it's far worse in the UK than it is in the US. Consumers in
the UK have less choice than those in the US or most other places.

Don't think so? Ask any American who'd lived in Britain for a little
while about this. Just drive from one UK town to another and see how
strikingly similar the shops are in town after town. Boots and
Superdrug, currys/dixons and comet.. etc.

God I hope not. I used to work for Dell. It would be tragic if they bought
out PalmOne as they tend to screw up every type of device they make in some
way, by making them more and more proprietary and more and more cheaply
built. Despite there excellence in marketing.

Have to quote the marvelous Edina, from the Brit TV series, "Absolutely
Fabulous":

"I don't want more choices. I want better things!!"
