I'm going to be buying a Gigabyte GA-8IHXP board and was wondering what type of ram to get. Will 2 sticks of 256MB PC-1066 or 2 sticks of 512MB PC800 RDRAM be faster? And also, would my board be able to safely overclock the PC-800 to PC-1066 speeds?

1066 is faster. Will you need more than 512MB total?

Yes this mobo is fine for both speeds.

512 mb stick cost way to much
Pc1066 is really faster and can be overclock to Pc1200 even maybe a bit more if you are lucky
Pc800 can be overclock easy to Pc1066 even maybe a bit more if you are lucky

personnaly suggest moving to Pc800

Why would you put the voltage to go over the 600MHz signal? That won't help you much unless the FSB speed is also increased. So say you got the signal to 610MHz for an effective 1240MHz DDR signal. You will make it harder for the RMC and the RAC to build an accurate ratio between the FSB and the memory bus.

Under a 610MHz signal the FSB will have to be 152.5 to be at a 1:1 ratio. Say you got it up to 615MHz, that would need a FSB of 153.75MHz.

It will just probably make someone go nuts and will not be worth your while.

Back to you...

A lot of people are experiencing bad failures when overclocking PC800 to PC1066 speeds.
