Burning dvds

everytime i burn file to a dvd-r it will not play on my dvd player

Are you able to read the disc on your computer after you burn it?

make sure you are using correct format for the video file

Are you just burning a raw video file onto a DVD, like you would if you put it onto a thumb drive? Because that won't work for most DVD players. A video DVD has a very specific format, and you need special software to create one. Some versions of Windows come with software to do it (DVD Maker I think).
