I recently wanted to use the wired connection on my laptop after not having used it in about a year. After plugging in the cable, both Debian and Vista indicate that the link is not connected. I decided to see if I could first get it working in Vista. I have a Realtek Ethernet controller, so I went to http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?... and downloaded/installed the latest drivers and the Windows Diagnostic Program.
After installing the drivers it still wasn't working, so I ran the diagnostic tool, once with the cable unplugged and again with it plugged in. All diagnostic tests passed. I then looked at the cable status. Pair 1-2 is showing as "short", both with and without the cable plugged in. The link status in the general information is always displayed as "Disconnected". I looked it up and pair 1-2 is the transmit pair. Could this pair having a status of short indicate that my Ethernet controller is bad?
