I was wondering what you guys would recommend for a live performance oriented
phrase sampler where I could play, for example, a digeridoo drone and loop it
immediately, then build other loops on top of it from other instruments? I'm
thinking it'd be best to have a foot controller to start/stop loops. Thanks.

Standalone or computer?

Probably standalone, though i'd consider laptop options. i'd want high quality
stereo samples and i know i'd run out of memory quickly on a standalone.

For Laptop you might want to check out ableton's Live:

For a stompbox, the Boss RC-20 will hold 5 minutes worth of samples.
It is, however, oriented to electric instruments. It could be made to
work with a mic and adapter, but I do know know how good the sound
quality would be in that situation or how much hassle it would be. I
love mine for guitar.

Gibson Echoplex, the new digital one. It's pricey (800 street maybe +
200 for awesome footpedal) but I've seen it in action and It's
unstoppable. It's a rack unit and I know that's an issue for some.
Check out the specs and reviews on harmony-central and looper's
delight, it's the real deal. I've seen the boss one in action too but
the echoplex is the cat's pajamas.

As the happy owner of an Oberheim Echoplex Digital Pro (same as
Gibson, just different logo, software revs notwithstanding) I concur:
it is easily the most comprehensive looping delay/sampler available
for live performance, and short of perhaps a TC2290, offers the best
fidelity as well.

However, the OP asked about a stereo sampler. The Gibson/Oberheim EDP
is a monophonic unit; a pair can be strapped for stereo operation, but
then the cost essentially doubles.
