How do I "reduce processor load"

I am still trying to sort out a recording set up for my g4 titanium lap
top
I have the 410 firewire interface but occasionally I get a promt"drop
out has occoured, Reduce processor load"
I have no Idea what this means or how to accomplish it
i am using TC Spark ME
256K cache
24 bit 44.1 are other numbers I see often
This is simple archive recording to stereo feed from my mixers subgroup
(line level) outs

It means the processor chip in your G4 hasn't got enough ooommph to do what
you're asking it to do.

Looks like the programs you're running use so much of the G4's capability
that it can't deal with reading / writing the disk drive reliably with real
time audio data.

I could give some advice if it was a Windows PC but a Mac ? Sorry.

I don't think you can upgrade the processor in a G4 can you ? Possibly more
memory ( RAM ) *might* help.

The classic advice in Windows is to avoid running programs in the
background that you're not actively using.

Increase the 'samples per buffer' setting, or whatever your software calls the
process by which the CPU has more time to process numbers, thus resulting in
more latency, but better computer performance.

Get a Nomad Jukebox 3. IME they're more reliable than laptops. However,
they are not compatible with Mac.

I do on location recording as a adjuct to my primary mission of
providing live sound service
I am just starting the learning curve at this point
if a desk top would serve me better and I become competent enough to
sell this service I will get what is best
I appreciate all the info so far
I found several things that were mentioned and have made adjustments
next live music gig is sept 12th I get to try again then

Thank You Peter I will consider it
do they make cards that can hold 4 gigs of sound? a minimum would be 2
gigs to be sure to capture those Hindu Ragas
