I am still trying to sort out a recording set up for my g4 titanium lap
top
I have the 410 firewire interface but occasionally I get a promt"drop
out has occoured, Reduce processor load"
I have no Idea what this means or how to accomplish it
i am using TC Spark ME
256K cache
24 bit 44.1 are other numbers I see often
This is simple archive recording to stereo feed from my mixers subgroup
(line level) outs

It means the processor chip in your G4 hasn't got enough ooommph to do what
you're asking it to do.

Looks like the programs you're running use so much of the G4's capability
that it can't deal with reading / writing the disk drive reliably with real
time audio data.

I could give some advice if it was a Windows PC but a Mac ? Sorry.

I don't think you can upgrade the processor in a G4 can you ? Possibly more
memory ( RAM ) *might* help.

The classic advice in Windows is to avoid running programs in the
background that you're not actively using.

Obviously, try not to run anything else at the same time.

Less obviously, look around to see if there are any system processes
happening that you don't really need. And check the recording app to
see if you can increase the cache sizes. And (dare I say it?) most 24
bit recording systems don't offer significantly better performance
than 16 bit, so try dropping back to 16 bit (you'll still need 24 bit
or FP subsequently, but tracking should be no problem at 16 bit with
levels set reasonably well). For simple recording task I doubt there
will be issues with RAM size.

Increase the 'samples per buffer' setting, or whatever your software calls the
process by which the CPU has more time to process numbers, thus resulting in
more latency, but better computer performance.

plugins take up processing power, especially reverbs. so turn off
your reverbs if you get the warning sign.

Get a Nomad Jukebox 3. IME they're more reliable than laptops. However,
they are not compatible with Mac.

Any other programs/processes running?

Is the laptop in power-saving mode? There should be a setting
somewhere to choose between performance and battery life.

Have you a desktop machine available? The only reason to choose a
laptop for audio work is absolute necessity.

I do on location recording as a adjuct to my primary mission of
providing live sound service
I am just starting the learning curve at this point
if a desk top would serve me better and I become competent enough to
sell this service I will get what is best
I appreciate all the info so far
I found several things that were mentioned and have made adjustments
next live music gig is sept 12th I get to try again then
Thanks

OK, at least you get a message about it.

There are several options.

First of all you disable *all* powersaving schemes, it could be that the
laptop is plain bored because almost nothing happens and then reduces
CPU clock frequency to save power. Doing this can be problematic in case
the laptop is unhappy about running on mains power, I recall seeing
reports of some people having hum problems in case they are not running
on battery.

Next you look at the display options for the audio software, some
software offers to display way too much on screen while recording.
Disable all live updates but the level meters, it is a great comfort to
have them active and they at least do not require as much processing as
say a phase display.

George, you waste way too much time being concerned with whether any
laptop "gets it" and whether you remembered to save the file correctly
prior to shutdown. Get a Fostex FR2 and be happy, use the laptop for
macfoh or officeputing instead. No matter what, a laptop requires too
much attention and you have other obligations during the gig.

Seriously: arrange to try a Fostex FR2, perhaps run it in parallel.
Chances are that the 410 Firewire is slightly better, but the FR2 is so
much more comfortable to use and require much less attention and is much
less of a cause of "did I get it" worries, both are very good also ex
works. And moving the audio to the laptop or a desktop daw for editing
is just a matter of moving the memory card to a card reader. I think you
will way prefer that solution once you have tried it.

Thank You Peter I will consider it
do they make cards that can hold 4 gigs of sound? a minimum would be 2
gigs to be sure to capture those Hindu Ragas
I will look into the fostex
