i have a p3 600mhz and radeon 8500le 128mb. I have 3 128mb pc100 memory sticks = 384 mb ram. should i upgrade to 3 sticks of 256 = 768mb (thats the max i can go in each memory bank) and spend around 100 - 120 bucks. is it worth the upgrade? will i see notable performance boost? im mostly a hardcore gamer

With 384MB already, any increase won't bring you a noticeable increase in performance unless of course you actually use that much RAM. The only way you would is if you were into video and photo editing and used RAM hungry programs such as photoshop, etc. For games, even 3d games more ram than you have is not likely to help in terms of performance. A CPU and/or video card upgrade would bring you a noticeable increase in performance than more RAM. So if I were you I'd save my money.
