Hello,
I can't use my Linksys router to connect to the internet. My service provider had me connect the ethernet cable directly to my computer. I know my default gateway...and I've tried the default IP address to access the set up of my router, but without my router connected to my computer I can't get to the set up. Si I can't use the router to get on the internet...which is what I have to do to get to the set up of it, correct? What are my options?

If I understand you correctly, your ISP told you to connect the Ethernet cable from your modem directly to your computer?

If that is the case, instead, connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the router's WAN port.

In order to correctly log into the router for the first time connect a second Ethernet cable from one of the router's LAN ports to your computer. Now you should be able to access the router from the connected computer and administer the router's settings and update any firmware if needed.

End result simplified - Internet Access is passed through the modem, then to the router and routed to whatever device is connected to the router.

Find or Change Your Internet Security Passphrase

1)Open the web browser that you use: Firefox,Google Chrome,IE,or Opera and type in the IP address for your router, and press the Enter key.
http://www.routeripaddress.com/ < Router ip addresses can be found here

2)A window will open and then type in your routers default username and password, and press the Enter key again

http://www.routerpasswords.com/ < Router usernames and passwords found here
***** Username and Password may also be located on the side or bottom of your router *****

3)Navigate to the Wireless Security\Network Security Settings Tab and open it to locate or change your WEP or WPA Security Passphrase.
Use WPA because it provides better security.

4)Write this Security Passphrase down and put it in a safe place to access when needed.

5)Save settings and close your browser.
