I have a PII Bios-AMBIOS V 1.00.0.8 CS1T that was donated to our school. I boot it up and it says "Insert bootable media in appropriate drive". I put a bootable floppy in and it says "Non-system disk or disk error". I have tried two different hard drives but still same error.

It beeps once when it boots.

Thanks.

It sounds like you need to change the boot order in the BIOS so that the computer will start with the floppy.

If the boot order is set so that the system boots directly to the hard drive, and there is no operating system on the disk, you'll get this kind of error.

Thanks for the reply. I did get it to boot to the floppy with your help. I entered setup again added the to the boot option Floppy first hard disk second. I reboot and I get a:> I tried to FDISK after that and it says No fixed disk present. I do have my hard drive hooked up.

A couple of ideas ...

Make sure the hard drive is correctly identified in the BIOS. Try auto-detect first, and if this doesn't work, look up the hard drive specifications and add them in manually.

The IDE cable might have a problem. Swap it out with a new one.

Make sure the jumpers on the disk are set correctly. It should be Master, and not Cable Select.

If necessary, FDISK the hard drive in another system, make sure the partition you create is active, and reinstall and attempt to format the drive in the donated system.

If this doesn't work, then the drive itself may be bad.

If you swap the hard drive with another one that is valid in another computer, and this one cannot be recognized or accessed, then the mainboard might need to be replaced, or a new PCI IDE controller card installed.

I checked and rechecked the cables, tried a new cable and tried a different hard drive. Both drives hang after boot on :

Floppy A installed...

New board?

It does sound like the IDE controller might have gone bad, if you are certain that the BIOS settings are correct.

You could try to flash the BIOS; it couldn't hurt at this point. It couldn't make anything worse, unless you installed the wrong version!

Beyond that, I'd say replace the board.
