Is there a currently available Firewire audio interface tha has
drivers compatible with Windows XP SP2? I have a Presonus FireStation
that I bought last year, which quits working once SP2 is installed.
Presonus was of no help at all and informed me that the FireStation
has been discontinued. They were unclear over whether or not their new
FirePOD would work with SP2. I'm looking for alternatives. I'm very
disappointed in having spent $700 for a product that is obsolete after
one year.

Lots of stuff isn't working with Service Pack 2. My Digi002R did strange
things with SP2 installed. Even if you switch to another manufacturer,
there's not guarantee (at least for now) that their stuff is going to work
any better with SP2. Can you uninstall it? That's what I did.

There seem to be several problems reported with 1394 devices and SP2. The
general consensus is that it has to do with devices that are not IRM
capable. This was working in the last release candidate of SP2 but somehow
was removed (it's not a bug apparently) from the final release.

I have confirmed that I can use my Firewire drives and my video cameras with
SP2, but I have not tried my MOTU 828mkII yet. I only have SP2 installed on
a test machine and will not install it on my production machines until this
issue with 1394 is resolved.

Do a Google on "XP SP2 Firewire", and you'll find a lot of references. Like
Stu said, if you can uninstall SP2, that's your best bet for now. Frankly,
unless you have a lot of security concerns, you can probably run just fine
on SP2 for a while. There's a blocker available to prevent SP2 from being
automatically downloaded as well.

That was fast. What's different about SP2? Strange that drivers no
longer work. Did you try to re-install them?

That didn't even last two years, did it? What's up with these
companies?

I'll bet that they're surprised that the Firestation didn't work.

You should have bought some analog gear 25 years ago. You'd have spend
$100,000 but it still wouldn't be obsolete if you have the right kind
of projects.

Changes to the way SP2 deals with Firewire (specifically in the area of
isonchronous resource management). I'm not an expert, but it has to do with
the way the 1394 stack is implemented. You can get a bit more detail here:

I'll bet they are, too. LaCie apparently had to issue firmware changes for
some of their Firewire 800 drives as well.

I don't know what that means, but I'll bet that if video cameras and
external disk drives don't work, there'd be a revolution. The audio
community isn't big enough to rock the Microsoft boat so I guess that
if there's really a problem we'll just have to wait for it to be
resolved on their schedule.

I guess you mean SP1. It's probably safe, and even a good idea to
install SP2 on your home/business/Internet computer because of the
security fixes. But security shouldn't be a problem with a studio
computer because you shouldn't be messing around on the Internet with
it anyway. I realize that a certain amount of Internet activity is
hard to avoid, but you don't get robbed going to a legitimate
manufacturer's web site to get a software upgrade.

Apparently some folks are reporting problems with Adobe Premiere Pro now. I
haven't had any troubles with my external disks or my video at this point.

Yup. Typo on my end.
