You have a recovery partition on the hdd that you use to do a factory restore, press the F11 key immediately after powering on to see if it will boot into Recovery to reinstall? I take it you didn't create a set of recovery DVD's in case hdd fails.
If the screen itself fails to display anything, plug in an external monitor, butthis is a hardwrea fault and will not be cured by a software restore.
