Can't work out how to cut & paste from CEP into Sonar. In CEP you can set
the clipboard to Windows Clipboard but this doesn't work, nor does setting
it as the Local Settings/Temp folder. So does Sonar use another clipboard?
No joy on Cakewalk or AudioForums. I know if the clip originates in Sonar
you can automatically load it between the two apps (via Tools in Sonar &
Save in CEP), but no go if it originated in CEP?

I haven't checked but I'd be surprised if they used the standard Windows
clipboard (and if the data is in a proprietary format inter-app pasting
would be useless anyway). You're talking about potentially a HUGE amount of
data; enough to rob your system of all it's resources (or at least bog it
down badly). They use file timestamps to tell if you've, Alt+tabbed to
another program and changed a WAV file for example and will offer you a
chance to reload the updated file (at least Sonar does).

Windows provides a facility called "delayed rendering" for such cases.
Rather than place a large amount of data on the clipboard directly, the
application can indicate to Windows that, in the event the user tries to
paste the data into any application, Windows will call back the originating
application at a specified address in its code. The application can then
provide the needed data at that time, in the requested format.

It is understood, in that case, that closing the originating application
is an event which will cause Windows to request immediate rendering of the
data in the most general available format. For that reason when you close
certain applications that use this approach (e.g. Microsoft Word) you will
see a dialog box that says, "You have placed a large amount of information
on the clipboard. Would you like this information to be available to other
applications after you close [Word]?"--and allows the user to click Yes or
No at that point.

This facility has been available since the 16-bit Windows era. It was
certainly implemented in Windows 3.1 in 1992, and quite possibly earlier.

CEP can use the Windows clipboard in a standard fashion. In this case
a standard wav file is generated in the default temp directory and its
name is placed in the clipboard area. So it does not hurt the operating
system but it occupies 10.5 MB per second (stereo 44.1/16) on %temp%.
