OK, I plunked down my 39.95, installed it, signed in as a novice, and
waited for the new game to load. The bar goes all the way over
and...desktop.
What gives? Is a Pentium 4- 2.4, a gig of ram, and a Radeon 9800 pro
not enough for this game?

What's wrong with that. It sounds like it's working perfectly!

What OS are you running?

Are you running the latest video driver, sound card driver, motherboard
drivers, ... and do you have the most recent version of DX?

If all else fails, visit the support section at iD website and see if your
problem is listed. Look for an FAQ. Or fire off an email to iD Tech
Support.

you have the perfect system requirements to run doom3

if doom3 is not working it means your system is not well so
you must "heal" it
and to heal it you use the usual procedures...
i'm no expert but i think you do stuff like check the way
you have your system assembled, install the most recent os
service packs, graphic card drivers and directx etc

there is no better way to test a system than to run a very
demanding pc game like doom3 cause it will make your system
work hard and take it to the max
so you should thank doom3 for making you see something was
not right in your system

good luck

Do you have any CD copying software on your computer? CD Clone? Alcohol?
If so, you may need to remove it.

I have Nero. Could that be the problem? But I would like to keep it;
to counter what steamKILLER says, if this is indeed the problem, thank
you DOOM for dictating what programs I can have on my machine.

No idea, but:

Doom 3 Guide:
http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/Doo [...] rivers.htm
http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/Doom3/Doom3Guide.htm

I just hate the default error handler for DirectX - it instantly closes the
program with no error message, leaving the users in the dark about what
went wrong.

Uninstall your ATI drivers and reinstall them - I recommend the 4.12
catalysts
for your card. You've gotten to the menu screen so I dont think its an issue
with
copy protection but if it were I would download a nocd crack from
www.gamecopyworld.com
and use that - its the first place I look when installing a new game as copy
protection
can cause problems with certain CDROMs/DVDROMs. Nero is not a problem.
Dont bother with "anything" steamkiller or sayno or whatever he's calling
himself these days
says - the sad wanker doesnt have a clue.

Wouldn't think Nero would be a problem. I had had CD Clone and had to
remove it...not only via the uninstall program but I also had to regedit to
get rid of the little traces of it still in registry. Only then would it
load for me. However, the other poster's recommendation of getting the nocd
file would be a good troubleshooting first step. If the copyprotect is
causing you a problem, the nocd patch will circumvent it. If it *still*
won't load, then it's another issue. This would seem like an easy step to
try (the nocd file).

Thanks for the links. Having just got into Doom 3 these will be handy for finding the best
visual vs. fps tradeoff.

I have a 2.8GHz Northwood C Pentium 4 with 1GB RAM and a Radeon 9800 Pro
128MB all running at stock speeds and have no issues getting the game to
work. There does seem to be a memory leak problem with some of the newer
Catalyst drivers in association with this game (the game becomes
increasingly jerky unless you do a vid restart or exit the game and re-enter
it), but I've never been dumped to the desktop. I assume you have patched
the game itself to the latest version?

For what it's worth, I also have Nero installed (6.6.0.8a) and both Doom 3
and Resurrection of Evil ran fine. I tried installing Nero 6.6.0.12 but
found it caused my computer to occasionally freeze up and force me to go to
the task manager and close open windows, although this mainly only happened
when watching video files. I have not tried the latest 6.6.0.13 version of
Nero since there's really no need for me to have it.

I updated the driver for the Radeon 9800 Pro card and now Doom 3
works! The download from ATI was: 5-5_XP-2k_dd. Following those
spiderpuppy bots around was fun, but I wasn't prepared for the
onslaught in the com room the first time around.

see i was right!
i told you to also upgrade the graphic card drivers
don't pay attention to scum pirates that populate this group
trying to scare you making you believe that copy protection
is to fault for everything and you need cracks
you are a true pc gamer and buys the pc games you play like
doom3 and they are scum thief pirates that should be ignored
now enjoy playing doom3 a fabulous game and don't forget it
is also available an expansion pack called resurrection of
evil that is also very worthy to buy

now if you let me i would want to analyze this particular
thread to prove how serious and necessary fighting against
piracy is

thread: "getting doom 3 to work"
date: may 30 2005
author: bub209@aol.com

posters (evidence of criminal behaviour):
bub209@aol.com (TRUE pc gamer buys his games)
Einstine (no evidence in either way)
Michael Cecil (no evidence in either way)
OldDog (not a pc gamer doesn't buy any games)
steamKILLER (true pc gamer buys his games)
Peagee (CLEAR EVIDENCE OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOUR)
Lithurge (not enough evidence of criminal behaviour)
Raymond Martineau (no evidence in either way)
Sleepy (CLEAR EVIDENCE OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOUR)
NightSky 421 (not enough evidence of criminal behaviour)

conclusions: like i've been saying this group is infested
with scum pirates just look at this thread, with just 10
posters at least 2 of them promote piracy and 2 other at
least show sympathy for it... almost 50% of the posts in
this thread show criminal tendencies... now isn't this
very serious and shouldn't we all do something about it?
fight piracy!
protect pc games!
