I'm looking into buying this Linksys Wireless Router with the 802.11b technology, with one Wireless USB Network Adapter and one regular NIC for use with Internet 4Mbits cable connection. Now, one computer is in the basement and the other on the second floor, where cable connection is. My question is, will there be any problem for the basement computer to connect to Internet via the Wireless network? Anyone had experience with this?
Do I need any other equipment for this to work, besides the RJ45 cable for the regular NIC?

You might be able to save $120+ if you just build your own antenna, and buy an el-cheapo pcmcia card and a dongle.
But if you're set on usb, see if you get an antenna with the adapter. That's about the only thing that you'll be needing in addition to the cards/boxes. Doesn't need to be a high gain antenna for just inside your house.
I attempted to set up a wireless network in a client's home. The main pc was in the family room, the other was about 25 feet away in a bedroom. It got a very poor signal. Why? It was where the walls in the house were situated. We just couldn't get a good angle. Basically, the signal was traveling through the length of a wall, not the width. This posed a great problem. Rearrange two rooms or hard wire? Needless to say we hard wired it. We ran the cables in the basement and came up through the wall and connected to a wall plate. Very clean.
Your problem is that you have a split level. Drilling through a base plate is tough enough. Using an exterior wall is also tough due to insulation. If the two pc's you're trying to connect are directly over one another, I think you might be okay. Otherwise, I'm not too hot on the wireless stuff. Their better suited for one large, open room surrounded by cubicles. Try it out. If it doesn't work, take it back and hard wire it.

Thanks, that's pretty interesting info!
I'll probably hardwire them for the time being as my home configuration makes it not that difficult to link a PC from upstairs to one in the basement.
Maybe new Routers with 802.11a technology will do better than those with 802.11b in the future. I'll just wait and see.
Thanks again!
