I brought the IBM GXP120 80gb hd and i think i didn't format it properly. When i check the size of the hd it saids 31.4 gb FAT32. I am on windows xp pro. What can i do to make it run at the full size.

i think 32Gb is the maximum size that you can format with FAT32 under winXP.

either make 2 or 3 partitions or format with ntfs instead.

Yes, about 30GB is the maximum for FAT32 under WXP and W2K. Its about the most stupid limitation I ever encountered from Micro$oft. Theres is absolutely no reason for this, since FAT32 can support MUCH larger disks. And as far as I know, this limitation didnt exists in previous windows versions (e.g. 98, ME). So why would M$ make this limitation ??? Beats me. Really stupid. You have to make multiple partitions or format using NTFS.

Look on the bright side - perhaps it'd be better organized.

Better organized ??? Thats why the directory was invented. Would you like to have a 200 GB harddisk divided into 7 partitions just because of some lame limitation from Micro$oft ??? I dont think so
