How can I maximize the internet connection on my dsl router?

Hello,

My internet connection has been a little crappy lately, I've done all the things people said, scan for viruses, clean with ccleaner, defragment, get rid of unneeded services and processes. Is there a way I can tweak the settings of my browsers so they load pages and videos faster? I have used AVG Pc tuneup and there was an option to speed up the internet in my browsers: Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 9 by getting rid of some things in the browsers. I forgot what those things were. Could anybody help me replicate what the pc tuneup did?

By the way, I checked the download speed, it was 0.75 mbps for the download speed. This is a modem/router for my other desktop some other people use.
