(First, I apologize for the crosspost, but I don't know which group
this posting would be better suited for because it encompasses both
audio and video.)

I've been thinking about where I see myself in ten years. While I have
been able to codify _what_ I see
myself doing as part of the job, the part that I am not able to codify
is both how to describe it and what type of position/occupation it
would be described _as_.

Here are the elements of the position I have thought about. Does
anyone have a clue as to _where_ you would see this type of position
and _what_ you would describe it as?
* Building/specifying, managing, and maintaining computer
systems/networks used in A/V applications (Includes: UNIX system
administration, Mac/PC support, Cisco hardware, etc.)
* Producing audio content e.g. as a production assistant mostly on the
audio side because that is where my interests lie, but also having a
healthy knowledge of video.
* Integrating multiple A/V devices and elements according to
specifications for a facility or production. (show control, facility
integration, e.g. theaters, conference rooms, etc.)
* Coordinating special events/productions according to the
requirements of the facility, including managing all technical
elements and communicating with event management.
* Mixing live/broadcast audio concent in real-time when needed.

Any comments welcome.

Though I have no employment record specifically in video/audio
production I'd suggest that you consider the number of employment
positions that are relevant to the above (and the "normal" salary
expectations).

Of the above list that you give, I would suggest that the first gives
you the greatest potential of well paid employment into the largest
number of positions. Indeed, in my view it is the best to go for, since
the skills/experience are transferable into a wide spectrum of
employment opportunities - far more so than any of the others. The
demand for particular skill-sets change in time, and I would always
advise on going for something that is (and will remain) transferable to
met those changing demands.

Bravo.
Then down the road a piece, the original poster will have an excellent
opportunity to refine his career goals after gaining some real life
knowledge of the audio and video industries.

Sounds like you would be a valuable asset to a multimedia production
company. I have no idea what they'd call you. Probably you'd be a
multimedia producer with computer hardware and software support
skills.

Without some sort of realated college degree, you will probably pigeonholed
into what you do best in the eyes of your employer. You need to get as high
in food chain that you can as quickly as possible. You frankly at some point
need to become as preadatory as possible, in order to do what you want as
opposed to what others want of you. Isn't it sad?

Actually, I _am_ pursuing a 2-year associates' degree in multimedia
arts from College of DuPage, a Chicago-area community college
(http://www.cod.edu/media/). I also plan to do 2 more years at a 4
year school.

What kind of double talk is this ? Talk like this in _MY_ interview,
and I'll toss you back onto the street. I've got no time for BS artists.

I used to shoot a lot of guest/celebrity presentations in convention
centers and hotel ballrooms. I would always be nervous about the AV team
because I often had to rely on them for some parts of the shows.
Sometimes these shows were huge and complicated and having a quality AV
leader was a big deal.

Perhaps as a career you could look into upper scale Hotels or convention
centers to use your skills. It is a large responsibility and imagine the
pay could be quite attractive.

I shoot a lot of theatrical events and I have one big rule: Never
trust the sound guy! There are lots of qualified people out there,
but more often than not it's just somebody who didn't have anything
else to do that day.

Hmmm, being somewhat between gigs (so to speak) how does one
get on the list of folks that " ...didn't have anything else to do" on
said given day?
