First impressions are very good from me. I have only played it briefly
offline so far, but it plays surprisingly smoothly on my machine, it
feels a lot more realistic than BF1942, the bots are definitely a lot
better, I have already had some good LOL moments at unexpected things
that have happened. I am still getting to grips with some of the
gameplay changes, so won't comment on that for a while, but I am
certainly enjoying it so far.

I'd agree, assuming first impressions are downloading the thing.

Big fan of 1942, sold my copy of BF:V. Got the demo from a torrent in
under 2 hrs. Installation was easy enough.

Tip #1: Don't bother changing ANY settings when you first start the
game. Take the time to create a brand new profile, because you won't be
able to change your name from "defaultPlayer" otherwise. Your configs
and binds will not transfer to the new profile, that includes audio and
video settings too.

Keybinding: What a pain in the ass. The game will claim some of the keys
are already bound, but they're not. You may have to manually remove the
offending key binds from the configuration file. Every time you bind a
key, the mouse snaps back to the starting position on the screen. When
binding left and right movement, they've reversed the order from just
about every other FPS game, making RIGHT come before LEFT. Most
obnoxiously, if I bind [ENTER] to get in and out of vehicles, then try
to play and type a message, when I hit [ENTER] to send the message, POP!
I'm out of the vehicle. Kids, don't type and fly, it can be messy.

Audio: Awesome. I've got an Audigy 2 and a 5.1 THX sound system. All
channels are in full effect. There's some sort of super hardware mode
that I can't run, maybe reserved for Audigy 4? Default was software
sound accel. Changed to hardware, works fine.

Video: What, no option for 1280x1024? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!? So I
played at 1024x768 2xAA with mixture of medium and high settings. 6600GT
AGP here. Athlon64 3400+ w/1GB RAM, XP SP2. Used the drivers contained
in the install for BF2. I will probably have to turn AA off as they
can't seem to make text look decent with it on. Figured they'd have that
fixed from BF1942?!

Gameplay: Spent a little time in single-player then went to multiplayer.
Had a couple of crashes over 2-3 hours of gameplay, not bad for a demo.
Coolest moment: Tracking my jet with the outside camera as I pulled a
hard right bank with acceleration. I keep forgetting about afterburners,
which is fine because the map is small enough you'll run outside.
Harriers are fine for taking off, haven't got landing on the carrier
down yet.

GRIPE: Damnit doesn't the USMC have a freakin' RADAR? Are we supposed to
believe every aircraft in the game is stealthed?! I should be seeing the
baddies on my minimap long before they reduce me to smoking wreckage.
ESPECIALLY if I'm on the freakin' carrier, pulling AA duty.

COOLNESS: shock effect when a concussive blast occurs near you. The
"carrier" I guess is really a landing craft of some sort. Insurgents can
run their matchstick boats into the launching cavern, and spawncamp the
hell out of the place. But there is enough corridor maze in the LC that
you can have a decent fight on a 64-player server, just right there.

Now, if only someone could tell me how I revive the dead, as a medic,
I'll be okay :)

What would you call it? I think battlefield 2 is okay, not really

Changing key binds is a PITA. Haven't played yet, too busy
trying to work out where all the keys I use are already bound.

I've heard people saying this but I've missed it, I set up my controls,
even incorporating a joystick, and it was an absolute piece of piss. The
joystick is a godsend after I struggled through BFV with mouse &
keyboard, well worth the effort to set up and switch to when you get in
a plane. It's resulted in some great dogfights!

The game itself is awesome though, really looking forward to playing the
other maps. It's the first game in YEARS that has got me jumping out of
my chair celebrating and laughing out loud, so many cool touches.

Had a weird server moment that worried me at first, went to the PC ZONE
UK server and it was unplayable even though I had a decent ping, tried
some random German server and it was perfect. Guess they are kinda
efficient afterall. The in-game browser is rubbish though, really slow.

It's a definite memory hog. Take up close to 900 MB of RAM while I was
in game. This means any functional install of Windows is chugging out
the swap file even if you have 1 gig of RAM. I got by with 1.5GBs. The
graphics were good, but I wasn't blown away. The shadows are definitely
cool, though they have that jaggy look to them. I'm impressed with the
sounds and music, the gameplay is the same BG fare.

Well, the demo certainly saved me £27.99 :)

Not sure where those promo vids came from, but what I'm seeing
doesn't justify this update to BF1942-- certainly not at full
price.

Besides, a few games online have reminded me why I gave up
BF1942 online... I'm not good enough at killing. Never was,
never will be :)

A unified system of movement within each the menus would've been nice.
It's not as if any of the vehicles have complex enough of controls to
warrant an entire sub-menu to themselves.

I prefer to use ESDF for movement and it was a pain having to clear out
four, separate menus before being able to change one of them. Is this
an attempt to appease those who would like to use a joystick for
vehicles and keyboard for infantry? It seems rather silly that it was
made unusually difficult. Alas -it's fun once you've managed to wade
through ten minutes worth of rebinding all of the keys.

Happens a lot with the keypad. Every key I try to map to a keypad key
says it's in use but I'll be damn if I see them in use anywhere.

I like using the numbers on the keypad but it says they are in use but
they aren't so I can't even clear them out. Hope they fix it in the
retail version but I doubt they will.

It's a buy killer for me.

Lots of keybinds man. For many Different things.

Would be great if it let you use what every keys you wanted but tthey
just swaped with the ones you wanted to change EASY :)

If you want to change somthing you have to go to that key thats
stoping you and change that tome somthing that aintbeing used. Maybe a
combo key like COntrol A or somthing if aloud !!!

The go back and put that key on the one you want. OH THE JOY.

You have to go though it on every game some make it easy some DONT :(

I'd be happy if someone could tell me why the game insists on updating my
video card (6600GT) drivers ... when I'm using the latest ones - unless it
means Beta drivers?

Also this wouldn't be the first game that wont allow me to run in native
resolution (1280 x 1024) of my LG 17" LCD - why do they do that!?(

Oh and the load time seems overly long and I thought 1 Gig of RAM would be
plenty ... seems I may be wrong!

Append;

+szx 1280 +szy 1024

Under properties/shortcut/target of the BF2 icon.
