I am fairly new to building my own system. Can somone tell me is it better to go with 2 256mb RAM or 1 512mb ram? My MB is asus p4b533-v. I will mostly use it for gaming and photo editing. I plan on using 2700 any suggestions.

I would go for 1 stick Samsung PC2700 512 MB

1 stick overclocks better and sometimes gives more stability.

My question is the same, but I'm going to use an AMD and it's for gaming, what's better 2 * 256MB DDR or 1 * 512MB DDR? (I'm going for the PC2700, was thinking of Corsair XMS, but recommend me others if u think they're better)
Thanks.

Same answer. You always get better "behavior" using only 1 stick.
Corsair XMS is good memory, if price doesn't matter just buy it.

1x512mb. Plus you can add a lot more memory for Photoshop later if needed. I have 512 in my laptop and never thought I'd use it all. But I've seen swap files approach 1 gb.

Both are reliable, decent brands. Samsung tend to be cheaper, and come without thermal spreaders and corsair tends to be a bit more expensive and have thermal spreaders. The heat reducing value of thermal spreaders is questionable, but non-the less I like them because they look cool )

Either way both have lifetime warranties (don't remove the tags) so I'd get the module that is CAS 2.0 for best performance. If both are and the extra $25 won't kill you get the corsair, but if money is tight you won't have any troubles with sammy.

Any recomendations where to buy ram from online? I have only used crucial in the past. Also is 512 about the right amount of ram to start with?

If you are not going to work with graphics-intensive programs you should be fine with 256 MB.
