The MP beta for F.E.A.R. is now open on Fileplanet. There is a bit of
registration hassle plus they make you take a survey on your machine
capabilities. It is about 440MB download. Have to say, the install is
very slick, no problems or any sudden crashes that have been all too
common with some demos and even retail games lately. It autodetects
your machines performance for automatic settings and does it very well.
It has a good set of manual customization menus after that. The server
screen is powered by Gamespy but it is very quick and getting on to a
server takes almost no time. It looks like there is only deathmatch
going on now, or maybe that is just the most popular. Wow, the maps and
overall graphics look very good. There doesn't seem to be hardly any
lag. It is kind of hard to say for sure because the death match action
makes it difficult to just look around and see what is going on.
Anyway, this open MP beta is very encouraging for F.E.A.R. overall, if
it is any indication. Just visually, it is very nice and the weapons
and action are really good also. Hopefully, there is a good single
player game when it comes out but the MP has a lot going for it also.
Looks like something to look forward to. The other games have been OK
but this looks like it is going to be a really good shooter.

I'm totally underwhelmed by it, the maps in particular are awful, just
dull rectangular corridors with the odd big room, I'm bored to death
within minutes. They look like Half Life 1 levels.

The graphics aren't up to much either, the glass effects are poor, the
puffs of dust when you shoot a wall are ugly, the animation on the
players isn't exactly fluid. The sound effects are pretty good though.

I was really, really looking forward to this game, the singleplayer
could still be fantastic if the level design is up to scratch, but this
dissapoints me.

I really hope the fact it's a Beta is the issue and these are just
placeholder maps and effects, the videos I've seen look far more
exciting than this.
