hello. i'm thinking of getting a peavey vmp-2 as a primary preamp, and
an art pro mpa as a secondary one. is this a good idea? how do they
compare? is there a difference?

The VMP-2 is a good tube preamp and they're only available as a used item
anymore (no longer in production) . If you can find one, you won't need the
Art Pro Mpa.
Stephen Sank just modded my VMP-2 and it is somewhere between New Mexico and
Alabama. I'm really looking forward to getting it back.
I'd try to buy one better one before buying both of those. You might
check out the Syteks. I have the Peavey and I use it and like it, but
I dont' think I'd want it for my main pre.

Sorry, I thought he was asking for tube preamps, which the Sytek isn't.
If I was going to go with a solid stated pre, I'd look at the FMR RNP ($500)or
the Great River 1NV (1k).
I've got a GR MP2-NV and I use the Peavey about as much as the GR. What you're
recording should be a consideration in buying a preamp and also your mic
selection.
i'm recording guitar heavy rock and roll music, inspired by george
harrision's "all things must pass" and the raveonette's "chain gaing
of love" and interpol's "turn on the bright lights." i'm definetly
going for that warm, heavy, reverby, distorted,
not-necessarily-crystal-clear sound. i've heard that the mpa is very
colored and warm (almost like a special effect), so that i liked. the
vmp is the very peak of my price range...i'd like to get two of those,
but i just can't afford it. i do some demo-ing with an art tube pac
sometimes, and i think it sounds preetty decent on electric
guitars...so i thought i'd like the mpa.
that is a better explanation of my situation. thanks for the help.

From your description, the Aphex 107 might fit your needs as well. It has some
of the artifacts your looking for.
George Harrisons stuff was probably recorded on class-A solid state
gear, not tube pres. I would check out any of the Neve-inspired
designs. If you can afford it, buy the Great River NV-2 or NV-1 mic
pre, you'll be so glad you did. They rock on guitars and drums.

Well, it is a starved plate like most of the newer toob pres and really is an
"effects box". Distortion for guitars, dirty sounding, can be clean if you
don't hit it too hard. All the bells & whistles are on the front panel, has a
DI, 48v, phase reversal, 20db cut. It really isn't a bad sounding pre, but it
is not in the same class as the VMP-2.
I've got a 107 and use it for amps and such, but not on vocals.
and in your opinion, it sounds better than the mpa pro?
(thanks)

It's more fake tube stuff. It's better fake tube stuff than most, but
this isn't saying much.

It's not really a starved plate design. It's almost as bad, but it's really
kind of cute... they have a tube stage in there that adds something like
10 dB of gain, but they use an I/V stage made with some op-amps in the plate
circuit, so they eliminate the plate resistor completely. This means the tube
can actually be run pretty linearily with only 48V on the plate.
Aphex patented this thing and it's actually kind of fun to read the patent.
The interesting thing is that the linearity of the I/V stage is adjustable
with a little pot inside there. It's set at the factory for a particular
THD level on a 1 KC tone, but you can turn it up or down.

1. Fingernails on a chalkboard.
2. Alanis Morrisette's voice.
3. The words "bush" and "president" used together.

Yeah, it's kind of fun on bass tracks now and then, too, if you need to
dirty it up and get a little more definition out of the bass. But that's
an effect thing and not a preamp thing.

I only mentioned the Aphex 107 as an alternative to the ART unit. If it were
me and I wanted a tube preamp, it would have to be the VMP-2. The next step up
would be close to $2000.
As always, heed Scott's input. The man has forgotten more than most of us know
about recording.

Scott, how's their 207? Ever used one of those? If so,what's the diff?

I've never used one. I don't think it claims to have the "RPA: Reflected Plate
Amplifier" design on the data sheet, though.
