every now and then, the prog says "respect + ", however the respect
indicator stays at zero all the time (unlike the other indicators you
see when pressing TAB, like muscle, fat, which are constantly
changing)
is that a bug or should I have read the manual? thanks, bro!

I'm having the same "problem", but for now I'm putting it down to the
theory that the small amounts of respect you're currently earning are
REALLY small compared to what's possible. Could be wrong of course.

If you're at the start of the game (doing missions with Sweet, Big Smoke and
Ryder) then that's all it is. You'll see the graph slowly start to creep up
as you complete more missions.

Thanks, but I'm not having too many problems with the game or missions, just
wondering why the respect meter doesn't actually go up in line with the
others.

I got my respect up to a point where it said I could lead some gang
members, but I can never figure out how to make the follow me to do stuff.

Do you have a weapon armed when you do this? When I tried targetting the
guys hanging around by the Johnson House, they just put their hands up and
told me to "be cool" or something. Pressing "g" didn't do anything.
Does this only work when the gang territory colours are displayed on the
map?

I haven't seen any other games that present such a large detailed game
world seamlessly without any loading. What it lacks in ultra high
detailed textures and millions of polygons, it more than makes up for
in immersion, freedom and most importantly, fun.

I have a weapon in hand, yes. Are you standing close enough? AFAIK it also
works when the territory colours are not displayed, but it only works when
you've gathered enough respect.
They're not very helpful, though. Most times they'll just get in my way, so
I usually don't bother.

I agree, the fact that there's (virtually) no loading is commendable.
The textures and polygon-count however feels very dated.
HL2 is the other extreme - most pretty, but you can go and have some
coffee during loading ...
... also completely linear and I
won't even start about steam ...
something in between would have been preferable - Far Cry did very
well, grand graphics and noticable loading only between levels, which
were huge (not three houses and a dog, as in HL2)

Again, it is not so that good graphics is in any way opposed to
immersion, freedom or fun.
Bottom line: nice game, shame about the graphics.

Because you get a great deal of your respect from killing enemy gang
members and cops. Take over a bunch of territories and you'll have no
trouble with your respect level.

About the only time they are helpful is if you need to be shooting
from your vehicle (taking some along for vigillante missions is fun).
You won't get wanted levels from the people they kill.

True. As long as they are in a car, they are fun to have around. Good tip
about taking homies on vigilante missions. I found being a cop in SA is a
much harder job harder than in VC, so I haven't bothered that much with it.

I haven't played BP so couldn't comment on it, I might pick it up when
the plethora of bugs are reasonably ironed out. You can't seriously
put FC in the same bracket as GTA:SA, having a small island that you
can explore within a 20 meter path pails in comparison to 3 cities and
surrounding countryside to freeformly explore in GTA.

Far Cry isn't seamless. (e.g entering the ship on the first mission causes
a level change, which takes a 30 second load.)
>For that matter, Boiling Point?
That's a better example. Dungeon Siege also counts (provided you use the
less railroaded multiplayer campaign).

yes, but each "mission" takes - depending on difficulty and skilll of
player - 30 minutes or so - in HL2 you have a "level change" every 5
minutes and the reload times are about 4-5 times as long.

Right. But by recruiting some gang members, wielding the camera and
right click mouse aiming at them, you can still have quite a laugh.

You can also make them take a picture of yourself (CJ, that is) by
wielding the camera and pressing TAB when facing on of them...

I like to use them as ablative rear armour when riding a motor bike.
