UPnP Problem

Check in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services to make sure UPnP is
not only enabled but running.

I'm sketchy on this so please correct me if I'm wrong. I
remember that SSDP has something to do with UPnP. My
SSDP was disabled. I changed that to manual and started
it. Then I changed the UPnP to manual and started that
and it started this time. Should I leave my settings
this way or do I switch them back if I am able to get the
router installed?

The Simple Services Discovery Protocol (SSDP) service is the one required
for any operation involved with discovering and interacting with UPnP(tm)
technologies. If it were disabled, this explains both of your problems
(even having it in Manual mode would have allowed it to start when
required). For a small environment, you will want to leave this service
started and in automatic mode. The UPnP Device Host is not required for
interaction with the Internet Gateway Device (IGD), but you should have no
problems with leaving this in automatic mode as long as you have all of the
Windows XP updates installed and it will provide some nice additional
functionality if your other machines on the network also have these services
running. As you can derive from its name, SSDP is the lower-level service
that provides the ability to automatically discover UPnP-based devices and
services. The UPnP Device Host service requires it to be running in order
to operate.

The UPnP Forum has put a new "all-in-one" download of the current UPnP
standards, Device Control Protocol (DCP), and architectural documents at
http://www.upnp.org/resources/documents.asp if you want more information.
