I'm looking for a new burner to replace my 6x Ricoh, I wanted to know if you guys had *any suggestions on a particular burner to get (24x+) or any burners to stay away from*. Also, is the difference between 24x, 32x, 40x, 48x that big of a difference, or at the higher speeds does it not really burn all that much faster?
Lastly, what do you guys thinkof $60 (after mail in rebate) Sony 40x/12x/48x drive? In the old article on Tom's Hardware they said the sony actually wasn't that good (in the 24x model), have things changed much?
Thanks guys,

Dan

not much has changed Lite-On leads the pack for Bang to Buck ratio and Plextor and yamaha lead the premium brands ( but I like the lite-on features personally) as for speed .. all depends .. I have a 32x and a 16x the difference is 2:00 minutes per cd and I actually burn slower than optimum on both to insure highest quality

If you're looking for a budget writer, I'd look nothing further than LiteOn, like what the other two guys recommended.

Yes I would have to say go with lite-on like the others and please stay away from the sony burners (heard not too good).

Thanks guys. I just ordered a Lite-On 40x12x48x drive, retail kit, from www.z-buy.com for 58.75 (including fedex 3 day shipping).
I have a question about burnable media - I have 24x TDK discs, will they only burn at 24x, or should they burn at 40x? Do you really need 40x media to burn reliably at that speed if the discs are high quality (TDK)?
Also, about how long does it take to burn a full 80min cd at 40x?
Thanks for all the help,

Dan

if you use Nero and the lite-on it will let you burn at whatever capacity the disks can handle my 32 x lite-on at 32x burns an 80 minute cd at about 3:30 give or take 15 seconds

Ummm, just a little FYI here, but you can flash that 32x into a 40x without any problems. It only drops your write times about 15 seconds, but that's a "quality" 15 seconds 'cause you bought a 40x burner at the 32x price.
