What media do you use for removeable backup?

I'm wondering what people use these days for removeable backup/storage,
like when you need to put it in a safe place (like in a safe) in case
your house burns down or for sensitive info? Tape drives? Removeable
HDs, DVDs, etc?

It depends on how much data you have. For a few GB's of data, I'd suggest
rewritable DVD's that you can put into rotation and wipe every few months or
so. Just make sure to "verify" them as you burn them. The drives and media
these days are dirt-cheap.

Also, if you have tons of data (like captured video), many internal IDE
drives can be bought for roughly 50¢ per GB these days. I suggest checking
out the prices on Newegg. You can also pick up a drive enclosure and make it
portable.

My lastest backup toy is an 80 GB Smartdisk FireLite FireWire drive. It's
bus-powered and as small as a PDA. Smartdisk also makes USB 2.0 flavors as
well. I think it was around $220, but work paid for it and it's
oh-so-portable and fast.

I use DVD-Rs and/or hard drives. For small quantities (<= 1GB) of data
the obvious choice is a USB flash memory device.
Tape drives are far too expensive for home use.

Bought an Icy Box enclosure and made use of an old 80GB hard-drive. It'll
connect through USB2, Firewire or SATA.

My Windows workstations get backed up with a HP Surestore DAT72 tape
drive, my server has a HP Surestore DAT24 (DDS3). For Mac I use a 2.5"
40GB disk drive in a small external USB2 enclosure...

I use CDs and DVDs, but I also add a ~5% recovery record using QuickPar,
so that even if the data is damaged or lost there's a chance I can
recover it (or at least I'll know if it is damaged or missing.)

QuickPar can be found here:

I'm presently using DVD's, but I'm going to shift to a USB HD -
there's not enough storage capacity on DVD's.

@home CD-R or DVD (depends on what type of data i'm backing up- the
documents database is obviously smaller then the music collection) together
with a journaling filesystem (ext3)
@work the same but add a DAT-tape
