Wireless router's and protocals w/ vpn connections

my internet provider's wirless router will not allow my software or favrotes to work through my VPN connection. Not even if I hard wire to the router. Only if I hard wire directly to the modem that does no thave a built in wirless router. two diffrent providers have the same issue and have no clue on an answer.

I don't understand the issue. Just saying “VPN connection” only invites more questions. What type of VPN? Are you trying to use a VPN client behind the router, or access your own VPN server behind the router? What about some details regarding the VPN provider (if applicable), type of VPN (PPTP, OpenVPN?), make and model of devices, etc.
