Hi again,

So here is anotherquestion been on my mind. Are 1gig dimms very stable? Would 2 512mb dimms be more reliable and/or faster than a plain 1-gigger?

I ask this because I have a dual machine (tyan tiger,win2k) at my company in which we loaded in 4gigs of ram and it was buggy as hell. I removed 2 of he gig dimms and it seems more stable now. Are large dimms less reliable or is it that we had just an obscene amount of ram way too much for an system to really utilize efectively?

It's not exactly the stability of the memory. Usually, memory is very stable. But when there is a problem, and it uses that part with the error in it, then that's where problems crop up.

For future reference, if you wanted to test your memory, you can use MemTest86. It's free, runs on a single floppy in DOS. I mention this because you said one stick seemed to be screwed up. So, I would leave that one stick in, and test it overnight. If any problems come up, you might be able to get it replaced if it had a lifetime warranty of some sort.

The more memory the better, unless you're on a 16-bit kernel like Windows 9x systems. But, when you use Windows 2000/XP, it can't hurt to have more memory...especially for graphics-intensive apps.

If you're overclocking, then the less amount of sticks of memory you have, the better your chances of getting a good overclock. The more sticks you have, the less tolerable they'll be, because they aren't made the exactly alike.

That's all for now...
