Does anyone know if you can connect one power supply to the motherboard and a different power supply to the drives in the same system? If it is possible, which one would you turn on first? (I would think it would be the one connected to the drives.)

You could use an AT power supply for the drives, which would be first on and last off. Or you could use an ATX power supply and connect the switch wires from the main supply to the second supply making them simultanious. I forget which two wires turn it on, but they are often thinner than the remaining wires. At any rate, AT power supplies are a good choice for drives because they are usually $5 or less used (often free). They also lack the unneeded (by the drives) 3.3v source.
